Tourists were sent scrambling for cover after gunmen arrived on jet skis at a beach in Mexico's Caribbean coast resort in Cancun and opened fire.
The attackers pulled up to the beach on jet skis and began shooting at a beach in Cancun's hotel zone on Tuesday, Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, the chief of police of the coastal state of Quintana Roo, said.
Three jet skis have been found and seized, and nobody appeared to be injured in the attack, police said.
The shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents on the resort-studded coast, and came in the same week that a special battalion of National Guard troops were assigned to protect the area.
Mexican marines with bulletproof vests, helmets and assault rifles were seen patrolling Cancun's tourist-crowded beaches following the Tuesday shooting.
'It is too little, too late,' said Robert Almonte, an expert on international criminal organizations, in a phone interview with DailyMail.com.
On November 5, a commando of drug gang gunmen stormed a beach at Puerto Morelos, a resort just south of Cancun, and opened fire in front of luxury hotels, executing two drug dealers from a rival gang. The dramatic shooting attack sent tourists scrambling for cover.
State authorities called it 'a clash between rival groups of drug dealers on a beach' near two hotels. Several cartels are fighting for the area's lucrative retail drug trade, including the Jalisco cartel and the a gang allied with the Gulf cartel.

These cartels aren't too bright.
I assume they sell a lot of drugs to local tourists. These kinds of attacks are going to dry up the tourism business with the quickness.
No one wants to vacation where a shootout might happen on a beach, or be on a beach where you have to look at armed marines.

I'm not one of those guys who are just petrified at the sight of a firearm
But if the beach has to be filled with armed Marines walking around, that's probably not the beach that I'd prefer to be at.

Article from Nov. 5th
To be clear, the OP story references a different attack. In fact the article actually discusses the earlier November attack.
Also...

Quintana Roo State Attorney General Óscar Montes de Oca has revealed that there were five suspects who fired shots in the air without aiming their weapons at anyone.
The November attack hit a few drug dealers.

Cartels are getting stupid. Once they start hurting Mexico's main tourism hub, they are going to catch a lot of heat from their own government as well as U.S. and others.

Exactly. I went in 2000 and liked it so much that I returned in 2001. Would not take my family there, the Cartels took over. There was another incident last year of a shooting inside a club. Pathetic.
