Picking up Spanish again was a Covid activity. I practice a little everyday and I'm addicted. It is amazing how you can love learning something when you aren't forced to do it.

I can count to ten in Farsi for some reason.
One of my aunts had planned a trip to Iran in the late 70s, pre-revolution, but never made it. She taught me the numbers one time when I was a kid, and it permanently stuck.

Not to brag but I can say “ I’m hungry” in 7 languages.

I'm decent enough in Spanish to be conversational and do things like shop or eat by myself in Spanish speaking countries.
I don’t know hardly a word of Spanish and have made it around several Spanish speaking countries by myself. Countries like India and China too.
Unless there’s a really good reason (like a professional reason) to learn a foreign language, it’s a waste of time for an English speaker. Learning to hello, thank you, please, etc., in the local language as a small sign of respect? Sure. But anything else, there’s not much of a point to it.

I can speak, read, and write German at a basic proficiency. Almost minored in it but didn’t do International Business so didn’t.

I used to be able to read Spanish, but struggled speaking it because I learned on paper. Also had difficulty keeping up with friends that spoke Spanish because it was too fast
Debating if I should try to pick it back-up, or just go ahead and start learning Mandarin now

My mother is Danish, so we spoke Danish when Dad wasn't around and English when he was.

I speak fluent French as well as conversational Spanish. I can also read a little Italian and am planning to learn some basic Russian.
I could not disagree with your statement any more. Learning a new language isn't a waste of time. It's a portal into another culture. Learning a new language literally changes the way you think. Your statement is quite the spicy meatball and I'm basically mad at you for making it.

Currently learning German. Reading/writing I'm getting there, it's just the conversational aspect that is hard to grasp while only learning through an app.

I've been slowly trying to learn German over the last 2 years through Duolingo. Still remember a little bit of Spanish from high school.

I'm of the mind that learning how to say beer/wine/whiskey in whatever country you're in will get you pointed toward a bar room. Once you have the ear of a bar tender and tip effectively, you've got a tour guide for anything else you might need.
