13 is a great age to start travel ball. People will say "well jaxxxxxxxson won't make the JV team at his high school". I get it.
Spending money for travel ball before age 13 - when 70% of the competiton is not any better than what rec ball was 20 years ago... it is a self-fufilling propheacy.
Rec ball quality is low because parents don't like drafts that rec ball has. They want the kid on the same team each year with their friends kids.
100 percent of kids 8 and under, and 70 percent of kids age 9-12, have the talent that rec ball used to have 20 years ago. I said it twice because it is true.

Studies have shown that arm problems are happening way more in college/pro levels at a younger age because kids are ripping off curve balls at the age of 7

this really is ridiculous. we're u11 and throw hard and slightly less hard and try to work on location. other than that, nothing with movement.

Can you send some sponsors my way? My senior pickleball tournament trips are getting pricy

so here's my thought on this... my kids play travel but i also signed them up for rec the past 3 years. rec is pretty bad, i agree. but they wanted to play with their friends that don't play travel. i was also able to get some of the same players each year (4-5 of the same, the rest are randomly dispersed). being able to have continuity is such a big deal. i don't have to learn who can do what to put them in the right spot.

show me this study that shows elbow valgus stress is higher in a curve ball than fastball
you cant because its not, its actually lower and curveballs are not why more arm problems. and there arent really more arm problems just different arm problems. instead of shoulder issues its elbow issues. lots of reasons why that is, but curveballs is not one of them
this is my wheel house and i can say with 1000% confidence...you are wrong.
read and educate yourself LINK

curveball generally places less elbow valgus stress on a pitcher compared to a fastball, meaning that a fastball is considered to put more stress on the elbow when thrown with similar mechanics; most studies indicate that fastballs generate the highest elbow torque among different pitch types.
change up places the least amount of stress.

na you have nostalgia....the better kids are better than ever. and rec sucks because you have to play with kids that are forced to be there and want nothing to do with trying and play with kids who dont practice.

Travel ball can be some of the most fun times of your life if you find a good group/friends to do it with and you're not a psychopath.

For better or worse….its just what baseball is now. And it’s not just baseball, it’s all sports. Rec ball is dead and if you want to play your only option is travel, now travel isn’t what you think it is. If you’re from a larger area, like laffy, you can play all spring and sleep in your own bed every weekend. It’s not the villain everyone makes it out to be, IMO. Kids spending time outside playing sports and families spending time together. It can be as expensive or as affordable as you want to make it.

I wish rec softball was better but 2/3 of the teams don’t have a pitcher that can get it across the plate consistently and walking in runs for and hour and 15 minutes is not giving anyone quality reps. The batter or the field.
Travel ball helps with better competition as long as people understand limitations. Reps vs good competition is going to make an average player better but it can’t make an average player great. As long as the parents understand their investment, travel ball is fine.
The parents that think that travel ball is a pre requisite to varsity high opportunities are delusional. There are going to be kids that never play softball or baseball until JR or even high school that excel on natural athletic ability. That’s just the way it is. At the same time, there are travel ball players that max out their athletic ability in JR high. They just aren’t varsity athletes no matter how much money parents spent on tournaments.

stand on rec ball no matter what. That’s what I grew up on
Okay Gramps, make sure people are off your lawn while you're at it. 2025 is vastly different from 1990-2000 rec leagues. Hell travel ball in 2025 has evolved from 2000-2010. There are different levels to it, and like it or not but there are not many rec kids that will even make high school teams. As mentioned they don't travel as far/often as they used to.

Getting ribbed for playing rec ball is temporary
Aside from OT ballers, nobody does this

being a little entitled douchebag is a lifetime sentence.
True, but I don't think travel ball makes that any more likely vs rec ball. One could argue that higher standards set in travel ball requires the kids to strive harder to achieve the level they want/need, thus meaning the exact opposite of entitled.
For the record I don't have a kid in travel baseball/softball, but we do have neice & nephew as well as many friends. 10-12 years they were spending more $$ because they were traveling further requiring hotel stays, but the last few years as "travel" ball has evolved they typically stay within an hour so of home

somewhat....correctly applied weight training combined with jump and sprint training can make a huge difference. being bigger and stronger than everyone is a game changer. especially if you start at a really young age.

Had 3 of my so sons play TB. Basically they were a bunch of plus talent kids that played better completion. 3 age groups, no arm issues I recall.
