There is a lot of misinformation about sales.
You dont need a highly technical product to make big money, some of the best paid sales guys I know have commodity lines.
I have also seen guys that are outside sales guys that go the same route every month, slowly finding new customers that did very well. They basically get up, put on the tie and punch the clock every day.
I never liked that approach, I liked the freedom I had/have, I like the sales aspect but I really had the most success and most fun being consultative. If you learn your products, your competitors products, innovative stuff, old stuff...all the shite you need to know, you can bail your customer out time and time again. You will get all the share of their business you need.
That is worth something to a company, can get a higher margin and everyone wins. You sell 10 million a year at 25 percent versus 21 percent because of moves the sales guy makes with manufacturers, contracts and rebates, etc and the sales guy is worth their weight.

The large majority of lawyers don't do jury trials, most don't do trials at all.
Most cases don’t go to trial. Something like 1 or 2% of civil actions go to trial. Just plug the cases facts into Watson and the computer can spit out a number.
Smart contracts are becoming a way to have contracts automaticity update so you do t need a whole new contract when circumstances change.

So you don’t agree that the average person wouldn’t go to the competition that would reward them more for their work? How long have you lived on this planet to disagree with that?
You're so fricking stupid it makes my head hurt. I disagree with the entire pay structure therefor under my scenario this wouldn't be a problem. Jesus, do you need me to write it out for you like you're a third grader?

There is a reason that many of the medical sales people are asked to be in the operating room when stuff is happening.

You honestly think doctors are going to spend all their extra time sorting through tons of products trying to find the best product. No sales guys come in and help explain a very complex system so the doctor doesn’t have to spend hours researching each product and can have all their concerns addressed and questions answered in a much shorter time period.

And guess what, none of that matters because you're missing the most important part, the license to practice medicine and preform the surgery.
Who gives a shite about the license when you’re the partner to that person performing the surgery? The surgeon should be certain (bar the steady hand) that you can perform the surgery if someone put a gun to your head. A good salesman is a partner in the surgery, not an order taker, as you refuse to understand.

Do you know how much product they buy and the variation in patients? Sorry, the doctor isn’t perfect and neither is the sales rep. Both have overhead though, and if you’re the overhead to your surgeon, please tell me where you work and I’ll be sure to never go there in case of a medical emergency.

The top sales guys make more than the CEO, their territory run themselves and they get a $5000 a month expense account to spend on diners for clients. Pretty nice gig if you can get it
Before I went out on my own the CEO of the last company I worked for made 18.5 million last year. The leading rep in the company brought in about 400k.
And if you are public, you aint getting 5k in expenses anymore. And if you are the CEO, you get a jet, helicopter, round the clock security detail etc, etc...their expenses are ridiculous everyday if you add in all the requirements the board puts on them.

The CEOs pay is public info and I ACH the sales team their commissions. Some make more. $5k is their minimum required to spend

Overpaid and Underworked has been the motto of almost every salesperson I have had the luxury of working with over the last 3 decades. Didn't matter the industry, company or technical skill level.
Further, I have known quite a few whose real "job" was getting the job. Then just hem and haw and bullshitting without getting and clients or selling for two years before getting another job,
PS - the good ones are REALLY Good

I got an internship in their marketing department during college, taking 6 months off from college. That’s how I got my foot in that door. I’m no longer in the industry wanting a better work/life balance, but it’s a hard fricking job that has you working your dick off. Pays well though.

You seem reasonable and like you've been in the industry a while. Do you think you bring the same value as you did before the internet has become so proliferated? Maybe you do, that's why I ask the question. Obviously you aren't going to volunteer to give money back, but do you feel like you earn it like you used to?
I more than earn what I make. I started off in a territory where the previous rep was horrible. He destroyed the image of the company and I walked into it and worked my arse off. That same Attending that asked me to consider going to medical school actually told me I was naive and joined the wrong company. Many years later I made my bones and moved up to where I have 6 reps over +4 states and am constantly on the move to meet surgical schedule at the academics centers I cover (my field is very specialized and most of the complicated cases are only done at major trauma centers). I earn a great deal but I am worth every bit of it. I make my reps better, I have the trust of my surgeons and if I ever left my company millions of dollars would follow me....not that I would leave because I love my products and believe they actually save patient’s lives on a daily basis.

Society. Why don't you try it next time and see if you don't end up in prison for practicing medicine without a license.

The problem is you have competition with a triple digit IQ and they disagree with you, and thus your best sales people will go to them and run you out of business. You’re a moron.

For about the 10th time, I think the sales people bring value. This isn't an all or nothing special thing, I'm not sure how you all don't understand that. My point was and still is that the job description has changed tremendously and the pay structure has not, for better or worse.

A good sales person is integrated into the fabric of the industry they serve.
I went on 10-20 calls per week and gathered tons of good info, that information was extremely valuable and appreciated.

$400k in commission? The bottom of the barrel sales guys make that.

Dude sales people are not making more than a CEO, I'm sorry. The smallest portion of a CEO's compensation package is cash and they probably still get more cash than the highest paid salesman.
