Around $780 is the going price on eBay and amazon. It's a book about an SR-71 pilot during the Cold War and sounds immensely interesting but I'm not paying that much for a book. Why would they ask that much for it?

Might want to try the library to preview the book before pulling the trigger...

Probably because it discusses what was then a super secret platform that most people then or now knew anything about.

Maybe only a few will be made, and none electronically?

For a serious answer, it's out of print. I found a copy online in PDF and read it.

The seller feels like that is a fair market price and they will get their number...that is how the free market is sorta supposed to work. They may, in which case the price will remain or go up. They may not, in which case it will likely fall...

Good luck. I will not be competing with you to buy it.

Not really. It is factual. Either way, it is far closer to the topic than yours, so shove off.

Thank you for that incredibly condescending reply; I know how the free market works. But nobody in their right mind (well maybe a "my shite don't stink" pilot would be that arrogant) would think a book would sell for that price.

I tend to agree with a previous poster that said that they aren't being printed anymore.

Well the SR71 was a government project and they are notorious for cost overruns so maybe the book has the same issue.

The Air&Space Magazine published by the Smithsonian says otherwise-

"The Blackbird uses a vintage 1970 military specification called MIL-T 38219, or Jet Propellant 7 (“JP-7” to its friends)."

The first edition of the book was a very limited print. The author/pilot used his own camera to take pictures that were included in the book but not published anywhere else at the time. It also has some cool stories.
Subsequent to its growing popularity there were other editions printed and often times are listed for sale at the same price as the first edition.
I bought a first edition about a year ago
and can't really explain it's high cost other than simple supply and demand.

Google search "sled Driver PDF". There's a reddit thread, first link, with a Dropbox link that works. I don't know if they'd ban me for posting it, although the book is out of print.
