Isn't this why there are two different playoffs?

Doesnt have to be private to get athletes.

When I was in high school in Birmingham, Hoover (football powerhouse) had a lot of parents of gifted athletes sign 4 year leases to move into school district. Local homeowners and investors would let the family move into the school district and stay in a $500k house and only charge $50-$100 /month. Once the kid graduated, the lease was not renewed, and family moved back to their old home in their hometown. New family would move in, just so happen to have 9th grade aged freak athlete. This cycle would happen several times with several different houses.

No one could ever get any wrong doing to stick. Just some lucky families finding incredible housing deals from generous donors. Its really a heart warming situation.

What kind of guidelines? I know schools give discounted tuition to needy families or in times of crisis etc.

Most private schools give financial aid. The school in question in the OP makes parents fill out the FAFSA, just like for college. On the whole, it's need-based, just like for college.

At my son's school, lots of guys work cafeteria and other menial duties for financial aid/work-study programs. It's not all athletes, either.

If Derrius Guice comes from a poor family, which he's spoken about, he likely met the parameters for CHS' financial aid, anyway.

It is against the LHSAA rules to give athletic scholarships. Always has been. Nothing has changed.

However, a school can give financial aid to anyone it wants, in any amount it wants, as long as it's not tied to athletics.

So a kid, who just happens to be a football player, pure coincidence of course, can get a completely free "diversity" scholarship, for example. Or maybe they can get a "learning enhancement" scholarship. No rules against that!

One school, which shall remain nameless, used to have boosters, alum, etc raise money each year for "Gatorade purchases" and each year the booster club would purchase thousands of dollars of "Gatorade" to give to the team each year. The checks were made out to the school, but that's because the school got "Gatorade" at a discount and without sales tax. LOL.

Friend of mine telling me his 7th grader who is a really good athlete is being offered a full scholarship to private school in NOLA area. (St Martin's to be exact). If this is still against the rules like in the past maybe he shouldn't be openly telling people about it....

What's the deal nowadays?

It's against the rules but there are ways to get around them

1. You have the athlete's family apply for need based scholarship and ensure the athlete is approved

2. You have a "off the books" agreement with the principal and coach that the student will be either discounted or fully covered

3. You have the church leadership reach out to a financially successful member to "sponsor" the athlete

Each of those examples I fully witnessed in action personally while working at a private school

What I have also found is that this generation's athletes see getting a scholarship to a private high school as more "prestigious" than attending the "A+" rated public school that also has a great team.

There are more athletes than I can count from APSB districts attending private schools in BR because they were offered a scholly and that seemed REALLY cool to them.

When I was in high school(Alabama) we had 3 people that left our team and went to St Judes. They showed up at our practice and when we went to go get water he went up to about 4 people and told them to come play with them. IDK if they got scholarship or not but I know we sucked after they left lol

It's not a scholarship, per say

It's basically bringing in the athletes with offers of discounted school fee's. And then the boosters/grads donate cash to make up for the rest of their fee's.

It's a total sham. They aren't paying for these AA kids schooling for academics, it's ALL about Sports.

This is basically the FAFSA for private schools.

LINK

If you find a school on this list, they are giving "scholarships" for poor people that happen to be big, fast and/or strong.

I'm pretty sure Guice grew up in the hood yet went to Catholic High

That one is the most obvious answer to this question, but there actually are a number of kids, both athletes and non athletes, that grow up in NBR and other bad areas that attend catholic high

No, there are no high school athletic scholarships.

They disguise these as academic scholarships.

It's common now for schools in Louisville like nationally ranked powerhouse, and all-male Catholic high school - Trinity to do this. In the past, Trinity was 99% Caucasian. They have found their way into non-parochial leagues to attract urban youth to their school, many of which would a) not be able to afford the $13,000 year tuition, or b) pass the entrance examination/placement test. These are the kids that will get to attend from the pool of funds set aside from rich local alumni that are very interested in keeping their team "winning" in all sports.

This is all "allegedly" happening, and heresy of course.
