Let’s say you go to the ER, get a bill in the mail, and just toss it in the trash.

They can but they probably won't. Garnishing wages requires going to court and getting a settlement. I spent several years in the medical industry. Worst they will do is send you to collections and wreck your credit.

Hospitals that balance bill don't generally expect to be paid, the vast vast majority of their income is from insurance. Word of advice though: most hospitals will let you go on a payment plan for like $20 per month with no interest.

Nope. And welcome to one of the many reasons our healthcare system is struggling. And for the people saying single-payer is the answer, that’ll just hasten the collapse

I don’t know but I bet their collections department could garnish them, though.

If you don't pay your hospital bill, the hospital can file suit and obtain a judgment against you. If you fail to satisfy the judgment, then yes, the hospital can the direct your employer to garnish* your wages pursuant to the judgment.

Good luck with the garnering.

Not sure if THEY can garner your wages but they definitely WILL turn the matter over to a collection department what can sue to have the courts garner your wages.

I say people shouldn't be fricking scumbags and throw their bills in the trash. It makes life harder for not only the fricking scumbags, but for everyone else that might have to use those services.

I hope not. I have a hospital bill that keeps arriving but my insurance says that I owe them $0. So, I'm not paying them.

I'm sure they would have to go through a lawsuit first.

incidentally, this is EXACTLY why healthcare cost continue to rise...

uninsured/underinsured people utilize their services, they don't pay their bill, the hospital then increases rates/fees to recoup the money that other people didn't pay to offset the loss create from those un/underinsured people... it's a pretty vicious cycle, tbh...

That'd be nice if they could, if it kept idiots from going to the ER.

Why would you not just pay your frickin bill? Seriously, whether you agree with it or not you still owe it if you received care.

They can put it on your credit.

Just pay them $50.00 a month
