Yeah - try to find a used entry level/rental grade model V6 domestic truck, like a Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra. It won't have all the creature comforts, but you don't drive all that much anyways. You can probably get one that's 2-3 years old with low mileage.
That would make a very good "3rd vehicle" if you have a lot of land or the need to haul stuff.
You could probably save even more if you don't need a back seat. The regular cab rigs are a great deal.

17k to 20k seems to be the exact range of good used trucks. before cash for clunkers, it was 8k to 14k.

About three years ago I picked up a 2014 F-150 4x4 crew cab with about 60,000 miles on it for $24k.
It is a basic truck (no leather, no power seats, etc.) but it is a good running truck that was about 3 years old when I bought it. I have used it to tow a 30 foot travel trailer and except for steep mountain climbs it does great.

I bought a f250 2013 gas 4wd with 32k miles a few years ago for 23k. It's a work truck package and does everything I want.
There were several with 60-70k for under 20k miles. All gas motors. Look up work truck packages.

I haven't bought new since the 1990s. I always expand my area to include Houston and search for the best deal. My last two were bought in Alexandria and Orange, TX and I saved at least 5K over what I was finding in my immediate area.

Look for a used fleet vehicle. I got a 2013 Tundra for $18,000. Only had 80,000 miles.
Typically their pretty basic tho. Base packages but that’s all I care for.

I'm not the biggest Tundra fans in the world but i will say:
1. should be low maintenance even though mpg sucks
2. may pay a bit more than you want BUT see no. 3
3. your truck WILL hold better value down he road than any other trucks. period.
