Is how they portray it on TV in the movies really how it is in the restaurant biz?

Sounds like somebody's been watching the Bear.

If the chef is a certified chef, hell often be called chef. I worked with a lot of chefs in the restaurant biz. Of course, I never checked their diploma but I imagine that the restaurant/ private club did upon employment.
There are also a lot of helpers in the kitchen that are called Earl or Tyrone or maybe Amigo.

Saying corner and behind is a thing too. Hell, it's been a looooong time since i worked in a restaurant and I still find myself saying it sometimes.

I get it every now and then when I cater and have to correct them. I'm not a chef, I just cook. Chef is a whole 'nother level.

I enjoy cooking and try to learn as much as I can.
I can't stand the reality shows when everyone sucks off the celebrity chef. "Yes Chef" is fricking ridiculous. And the egomaniac chefs demand to be addressed this way.

On the one hand, I like the industry uniqueness of this practice. It seems colorful.
On the other hand, it seems awfully pretentious, and I hate pretentiousness.

In any restaurant there is a head chef or more of a hierarchy, yes. It is common.
In line kitchens where everyone is a "cook", no.

Yep, I haven't worked in a kitchen in a long time and still stay 'behind you' when behind someone.
'corner' fell from my habit long ago.
"Hot food" "hot food'

In the show that you’re referencing they did it as sign of respect and to make everyone feel like they were equals. I doubt that ever happens at real restaurants though.

Depending on how high end or how well the kitchen is run.
Chili's or Texas Roadhouse, not likely. Smaller kitchens or restaurants, especially chef forward, no doubt there are a lot of calls like that.
Someone said respect, but it is also feedback. Chef makes a call for different plates and the call "Yes Chef" or "Heard Chef" means you got what the chef is saying, no confusion.
