Thought of as crazy, Caligula was justified in how he ruled.

His father was a popular Roman general. Tiberius had him murdered. Tiberius and his supporters then proceeded over the next few years to kill the family and friends of Germanicus, Caligula's father. Only thing that saved Gaius was his youth.

So imagine you grow up, those dear to you are murdered and hunted down. You live in fear of suffering the same fate as well.

Suddenly, you have absolute power over the same people who made your life hell and killed your family. Keep in mind Roman society slavishly cheered on Tiberius's pogrom against the family.

He wasn't bound to the Senate as he grew up apart from its traditions. He was rejected by Rome most of his life. So his entire career as emperor was exacting revenge on the people who took his family and childhood away - the Roman elite. He made fools of them, flaunted their gods, engaged in depravities designed to shock and show his contempt.

It’s widely speculated he had severe mental illness from some brain defect. Likely due to all the inbreeding

I've heard the same thing said about the SECRant.

You have to be at least a little crazy to gain the lasting stigma he has.

I don't know about all that but seeing as how he was responsible for a movie showing a fully nude, young and fit Helen Mirren, I can't say his legacy was all bad.

Well, he made him a Consul, so I wouldn't doubt it.

Was Nero crazier than Caligula is the question.

The documentary stated that there was no evidence this happened. IDK.

Caligula was mentally unstable and an extremely cruel man.

They literally handed absolute power to someone who should have been in an asylum for the criminally insane.

Sure, but most of the stigma comes from the lack of sources. And the biggest source on him is Suetonius who sensationalized and scandalized everything. He's like the tell all writer of ancient writers.

A lot of modern interpretations of Caligula are pointing to him being crazy like a fox.

Those 3 men were/are a lot of things but dumb is not one of them. You may not agree with what they did/do or understand why, but they are not dumb.
