I’m going with crazy; you did not make a compelling argument to suggest otherwise.

They literally handed absolute power to someone who should have been in an asylum for the criminally insane.

This. Shortly after he took the throne, he became very sick. At the time, the people loved him because of his father and because they hated Tiberius. Even a large group of senators prayed to Jupiter, begging the god to kill them and spare Caligula.

When Caligula recovered, he brought the senators before him and asked them when they were going to do it. Die, that is. The senators were then forced to kill themselves one by one.

Yeah. Super guy.

Sure, but most of the stigma comes from the lack of sources. And the biggest source on him is Suetonius who sensationalized and scandalized everything. He's like the tell all writer of ancient writers.

Exactly.

Suetonius wasn't even born until 28 years after the death of Caligula and didn't finish the 12 Caesars until 78 years after his death.

There are very few surviving first hand accounts of the reign of Caligula. The ones that we do have make no mention of incest or any of the more scandalous accusations about him.

I'm not saying he was a normal guy because most emperors weren't but I do believe that his enemies had every reason to sully his name.

There are quit a few accounts of his reign, and many things, like the statues he had of himself placed in all of the holy shrines to venerate him as a god, still exist. It's how we know what he looks like.

History makes mention of the fact that his sister served AS HIS QUEEN until her death.

I mean, there aren't any carvings of him actually putting his penis into his sister, but there is far from "no mention" of incest.

And there's plenty of mention of all of the other crazy shite he did.

Yes, there are accounts of his reign. Most notably Tacitus (born 15 years after Caligula's death), Suetonius (born 28 years after), and Cassius Dio (114 years after). All were written many decades after his death.

No, it doesn't. Most of the accusations were based on how Romans held special events at their houses. Caligula showed favor to Drusilla by basically making her a co-host which would normally be reserved for a wife. However, he was a bachelor so it may have been meaningless.

Like I said previously, I'm sure he did some crazy shite. He was a young emperor with power most people couldn't even imagine. I also believe that these oral histories have been used to make him seem even crazier than he was to justify his murder.

Mary Beard shares a similar opinion
