Sounds safe and probably will have no negative consequences.

So, unless you murdered someone, you're free to hit the road?

Judge has 36 hours to decide whether to release them or hold them until the trial.

We tried something similar and it failed in spectacular fashion

that's the way it ought to be bc otherwise innocent people are being imprisoned a huge chunk of the time.

Supporters say the change will end the unfair practice of imprisoning people simply because they are poor.
This is absolute truth. Especially bc law enforcement and courts are so corrupt and couldn't care less about constitutional rights.

They're replacing it though:

quote:

The bill signed Tuesday will replace bail with a risk-assessment system, although it's still unclear how the system will work. It will go into effect in January 1, 2020, according to a press release.

Brown's signature gives the state's Judicial Council broad authority to reshape pretrial detention policies.

Each county will use the council's framework as a basis to set its own procedures for deciding whom to release before trial.

Most suspects arrested for nonviolent misdemeanors will be released within 12 hours of being booked under the new law. Those facing serious, violent felonies will not be eligible for pretrial release.

This could be a good idea in disguise... What if it simply allows the criminals a chance to leave the state completely, thereby reducing the criminal population in the state while at the same time not having to support them in jail.

This is genius.

On the surface, I like the idea of financial status not determining whether you sit in jail or not.

However, I'm interested to see how the system is implemented.

Damn right....go ahead and give guys that beat their wives or girlfriends that chance to finally get the job done and become murderers.

Give me a break.

So they will throw them in and there will be no bail? Is that even legal, you know, with the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing?

Or is it the other way around. You can be a serial killer that the law has been trying to catch for 17 years and if they find him, although he hasn't been proven guilty yet, his DNA is found all over each scene, he will just be released until his trial comes up? I assume they will at least monitor them right?

This is gonna be comical how bad this goes.

There will be even less of a deterrent to commit very violent felonies.

Murder and rape a bunch of folks and just get a court date and be right back out on the street to do it again.

I get changing bail for some things but this is a really bad bad path to head down
