It was for marketing.
If they didn't give her/he/whatever the award, would anyone be talking about the ESPYs this morning? No, no they wouldn't because nobody gives a shite about the ESPYs.
So they give the award to controversial people to get people talking and so people will watch.
Its pretty simple and people fall for it every goddamn time.

Part of me thinks it IS pretty courageous, even though it's definitely a different type of courage that some of the other more deserved candidates
