What happens if we become embroiled in a major war requiring a draft?
If your war can't generate the numbers that you need just by having people enlist, then you need to take a long, hard look at the reason why you're fighting.
Except that the two wars with the strongest moral causes in American history - and the most directly existential - both required extensive and stringently-enforced drafts.

This was coming.
All it requires is that they sign up with selective service if a draft is ever put in place in the future.

Do we need large man power anymore though? Any serious war would be between nuclear powers which hopefully will never happen. Either that or some proxy war like Vietnam which would likely be highly unpopular and ultimately not directly important to the US.
Never say never. In the late 19th & early 20th Century the general consensus was another large scale general war in Europe in living multiple major alliances would never happen again. Then in 1914 it happened.
In the 20s-30s many thought the advent of air power meant large scale ground campaigns were a thing of the past. Then WWII happened.
And just because another war on that scale hasn’t happened in decades doesn’t mean it won’t happen again. Remember, Europe went a century between the Napoleonic Wars and WWI.

Are you 100% certain? Willing to gamble our country's existence on that? And that's a pretty dangerous "hopefully".

That was in regards to hoping nuclear war never happens. That’s why I brought up nuclear powers. A war between nuclear powers like US vs China/Russia wouldn’t be a ground battle.

Here’s the thing. Nuclear weapons weren’t possessed by more than 1 country in any of those time periods you brought up. Nukes are the reason we didn’t have a WWIII with the Soviets. Now we came close on a few occasions but that war would’ve been a short nuclear one with no actual ground battles.
I’m saying if we ever get into an actual war (not some BS proxy war like Vietnam or the Middle East), it would be versus a power like China or Russia. We all have nukes. There’s zero point in deploying troops to try to kill each other when you have hundreds to thousands of nuclear weapons that can do it just as easily.

As for this plan to make women register for the draft, here’s my thoughts. Either women are equal or they’re not. And being equal means you’re equal all the time or none of the time, not just when it benefits you.
My thoughts exactly. Equality means you get the good and bad. So many women just want to have their cake and eat it too. It's time for women to truly realize than being a man isn't all fun and games like they think it is.

They’ll make women register for the draft just so they can say it’s equal, but if WWIII comes and they start drafting people, it’s still gonna be mostly men who get drafted and will do the fighting.
I bet it’s another case of women having their cake and eating it too. It will be fake equality.
If they ever tried to do this you would see lawsuits everywhere. I know I would if I was still of military draft age.
If a military draft ever does happen again (it's academic since it won't) and they try to do this I hope every guy refuses to report. It would be funny if every guy just got sent to jail and then the women would really have to fight.

Because that’s the whole reason nukes exist. All those countries are first strike countries.
So you’re telling me the USA, Russia, and/or China will all mutually agree to not use nukes and instead destroy each other by spending several weeks to months drafting and doing all out mobilization? By that logic why do any countries have nukes if they’re not going to use them if they’re attacked?
Also I mentioned nukes but there’s plenty of other tech we have right now that could supersede having a large army. Like missiles and drones that didn’t exist in WW2.

Feminists ruin everything.
Posted on 3/25/20 at 2:21 pm to Darth_Vader
Correct. And people today aren't dumb enough to enter a draft, so it will never happen.
Posted on 3/25/20 at 2:21 pm to Mizz-SEC
This is seldom discussed: a lot women didn’t originally want the right to vote because it mean signing up for the draft. We got Equal rights out of it though!!!

We haven’t drafted anyone since 1973. Only time it would come back is in case of WWIII, so never.
Darth, you’ve forgotten more about the military and military history than I’ll ever know and I’m not being sarcastic. But your statement here is one I hear often whenever the subject comes up. As a history buff, you know we can’t assume something will “never” happen just bc it’s unlikely. Yes, the nature of war has changed and politics would make it hard for the draft to happen, but the draft rolls are still there for a reason. It is hard to foresee, but if the country is around long enough then it’s still a real possibility.
