The Franco-Prussian War says hello.

There were numerous European Wars between the Napoleonic Wars and WWI. Russia fought Turkey, Turkey fought just about everyone in the Balkans, Austria fought Prussia, not to mention numerous civil wars, revolts, and revolutions involving everyone from minor states to Spain and Italy.

But none of these was a general war involving large alliances or coalitions featuring major European Powers. Th Franco-Prussian War featured Prussia and the minor German States fighting just France. It was not a continental war like the Napoleonic Wars or WWI. That’s what I was talking about.

BTW, if you’re interested in the Franco-Prussian war, I highly recommend the book “The Franco-Prussian War: The German Conquest of France 1870-1871” by Geoffrey Wawro. I have it in my collection and it’s one of my favorite books.

Darth, you’ve forgotten more about the military and military history than I’ll ever know and I’m not being sarcastic. But your statement here is one I hear often whenever the subject comes up. As a history buff, you know we can’t assume something will “never” happen just bc it’s unlikely. Yes, the nature of war has changed and politics would make it hard for the draft to happen, but the draft rolls are still there for a reason. It is hard to foresee, but if the country is around long enough then it’s still a real possibility.

You’re right. And I was being a bit facetious in my reply there.

I have a post somewhere in this thread where I address the issue of a possible conflict on the scale requiring the draft being implemented once again. Pretty much what I said in that post agrees with you perfectly.

As for this plan to make women register for the draft, here’s my thoughts. Either women are equal or they’re not. And being equal means you’re equal all the time or none of the time, not just when it benefits you.

First, there are lots of logistics jobs that women are just as suited to as men.

There are some exceptional women that are better fit for duty than a lot of average men.

I went through EOBC, AOBC and jump school with some serious high-speed low-drag women.

There were no women when I went through Ranger and Sapper schools. There are women now that have the right to wear both those tabs. Any human that completes either course has my respect the attrition rate for both schools is significant.

While I don't think they should have ground combat roles there certainly are plenty of rear-echelon jobs they can perform just as well as men. So have the sign up for the draft since it frees up more males for the ground combat roles.

Was just messing with you. I would say the various revolutions in 1848 were more impactful overall than the Franco-Prussian war.

Now this is a subject that would make a great debate.

On the one hand you’ve got the 1848 Revolutions where not much changed short term, you did have the seed planted that would grow into republicanism, socialism, and even communism later on.

On the other hand you’ve got the Franco-Prussian war that:

1. Unified Germany into an Empire
2. Planted the seeds of WWI to happen a little over 40 years later.

Which when you consider the transformative upheaval WWI has on the world, I consider it the pivotal event of the past 500 years, that opens up a whole other can of worms to discuss.

*sorry, I’ve been cooped up almost two weeks and my nerd senses are tingling*

Dont see anything wrong with it, you cant have equality without equal responsibility. Besides, society sees men as disposable so maybe they will think twice about going to war if women are eligible.

Screw that. I'm tired of men being the ones who are expected to take the more dangerous jobs, whether it's in the military or the civilian sector.

I want women to have to sign up for the draft and I want women on the ground in combat roles. I'm tired of this country seeing men as disposable and woman as untouchable goddesses.

So you’re telling me the USA, Russia, and/or China will all mutually agree to not use nukes and instead destroy each other by spending several weeks to months drafting and doing all out mobilization? By that logic why do any countries have nukes if they’re not going to use them if they’re attacked?

So you're telling me the Soviets and NATO both kept large armored and infantry formations in Europe while mutually possessing large nuclear forces during the entirety of the Cold War just for the hell of it?

Women shouldn’t be allowed in the military period.

We got exceedingly less lethal as a fighting force when we allowed them in.

It also serves as a deterrent and show of force. Especially since they essentially bordered the Soviets. But these countries weren’t implementing drafts to maintain the largest armies they could possibly maintain. I’m not saying we should significantly decrease our military.

Once again I ask you, do you think in an event of a war with Russia or China all sides would just mutually agree to not use nukes? And instead spend time drafting and mobilizing to fight a long war? The whole reason all 3 have nukes and are first strike countries is to deter war from happening because otherwise it’s MAD.

If you feel things are desperate enough to call upon a draft, why wouldn’t you not use your most powerful weapons? You’re essentially saying a WW3 might not involve nukes even they still exist.

Let's say the Korean peninsula goes hot and Chinese and US ground forces become involved again. Do you think the Kung Flu cabal is going to get Beijing incinerated because Allied forces broke through the 38th parallel? They're not going to give up power (let's face it, post-nuclear exchange, whomever is in power now in China won't be after). Or China invades Japan and we end up losing there. An American president is going to have NYC, Chicago and LA erased from the map because Tokyo went red? Not a chance.

You have any idea how long a draft would take? It’s not one week. You’d have to do the draft, find out who’s fit enough, train them, equip them (and other logistics), and deploy. The kind of conflicts you described wouldn’t last months.

Hell China themselves would probably invade NK to stop them. Paint themselves as the hero while preventing American forces from getting in. Your other scenario isn’t even less realistic. It would mean American soldiers being directly attacked so yes nukes. Because once again first strike country. That’s why we have nukes. But you think they’d call up draft and fight a long drawn out war.

Neither of your scenarios are realistic in the slightest. American forces are stationed as deterrent. No way China is going to throw everything away and be attacked by the entire West for nothing. And no way a WW3 doesn’t have involve nukes and instead is a drawn out war.

Also once again military tech has made having a large army not as necessary. You’re not facing insurgents hiding amongst the population. You can use your missiles and drones to destroy everything in site.

I guess the question is whether we are talking about more immediate impact versus long term and factoring the number of countries involved in each event.

I am taking a dive into the Crimean War and it's beginnings at the holy sites in Jerusalem.

for whatever its worth the war between Ukraine and Russia has shown us that the tech stuff only goes so far. In that war it basically cancelled itself out. The Ukrainian air force was shot out of the sky but the RAF couldn't really do anything either. Most people in the west haven't paid much attention to it but that war has devolved into a stalemate complete with trenches. I read that close to eighty percent of the casualties are from artillery. The 2 sides just face each other down and shell one another constantly, with occasional shock troop raids. The tech on each side negates the tech on the other.

Also, in Libya in 2011 and for the Israelis in 1973 it was amazing how fast the high tech stuff ran out.In both cases the Euros (for Libya) and the Israelis (in 73) needed us to give them emergency supplies.

I largely agree with you but I'm just not as certain. I could see a war between large countries not going nuclear. China trying to take Taiwan as an example.

Also, not completely related but the reason we haven't had to face the draft possibility is because the wars were fighting have thankfully included few casualties. Granted battlefield medicine is much better but in 65 we had about 100k guys in Vietnam and took about 2500 KIA. If that happened today it would put a massive burden on the army and the marines and we might not have been able to stay. We'd either have a draft, leave, or just keep plodding along while our infantry units took fifty percent casualties. It'd be a nightmare.

In general, I agree, however, it isn't about their effectiveness per se that I have an issue with female ground troops it is the affect on unit cohesion.
