BRPD touts 300% increase in BRPD job interest since April pay raise

That raise brought BRPD's starting pay for officers from $41,000 to $58,000—the highest-paid police department in the state, according to Edwards.
"The one thing we were missing to attract new officers was our pay," Morse said.
The chief said he is looking for new academy candidates as well as current officers from other departments wanting to make a move.
The deadline to apply for BRPD's January academy is Monday, Aug. 31, according to Morse, and 67 people have applied so far. He and Edwards expect to add 50 to 60 new officers in 2027.

A top performing police officer is worth 3x this to its community.
The problem is the demographic committing the crimes doesn’t contribute to the tax base.

Because the previous $41,000 to be an officer in BR is horrid pay for what they have to do. $58,000 is still rough.

Agree. I know several EBR Sheriff officers. They say they make much better money from throwing on the uniform and working extra duty detail - concerts, football games, etc.

Yeah I found a link after submitting my previous post. It still doesn't answer my question about raises after 2 years of working, but still good info. $7,200 raise after one year of working.
And to your point @Shexter, extra duty details pay between $30 to $50 per hour. Explains the willingness for officers to take these extra duty shifts.

Which is fair to a point, I would just expect a metro department to have a full class of cadets. Maybe that's just how bad it has been that finally having a full class is worth a press release.

To think $41K/yr is roughly $20/hr you can see why no one was willing to take the job, especially if they were assigned to the 1st precinct in NBR, patrolling Plank Rd.

BRPD is just BR last I checked. Not the metro. And a quick Google search tells me that number is considered a healthy class size for mid to large size city police forces around the US.
ETA it’s a press release because the raises were a big political trust fall that everyone was taking and getting a full class size is step 1 of what hopefully foreshadows more results down the road. Anyone who has complained about crime in BR should see it as positive news. Where they go from here, I guess we’ll see.

I can't fricking imagine being a cop in BR for $23 an hour... That's fricking insane. More power to them though, I know they get hella ot and benefits, but still
