I was playing intramural softball yesterday, and rolled over my foot on a play in the OF. I heard/felt a crack/pop-like sound, and as the game went on I couldn't put weight on the foot to run. I can walk, but it's a very slow limp because I'm not putting my entire weight on it. I'm getting an X-ray after work, but I'm curious if there is a specific symptom that could help me determine what the issue is without going and spending $ at the Dr. My health insurance kicks in about 20 days from now, so it'll be pricey for a visit and X-ray

I honestly wouldn’t go to the dr today

If they diagnose you with anything today then insurance won’t cover any surgery needed

Get a walking boot and tough it out for 20 days

If it doesn’t look like this, just suck it up.
More than likely it’s just a sprain, especially if you can walk on it. The worst I’ve ever sprained my ankle was when I was sliding into third base and heard a loud pop. Foot turned black and blue quickly.

I've partially torn ligaments in my both my ankles at two different times, which is ultimately a bad sprain. Both times, almost my entire foot and ankle were purple for a couple weeks. I got an x-ray the first time it happened. The doctor told me that time that "if it was broken, you would know it". So my advice to you is that your foot is not broken, but sprained. While it may be a really bad sprain, if it were broken, you'd know it.

I rolled my foot stepping off my patio a couple of years ago. Seeing my foot the way it rolled, I thought for sure I severely messed something up. Went to Dr. had it checked out, nothing broken.

I had an old walking boot and he said to put that on, that it would be the quickest way to get it heeled.

When I switched jobs I had that 60 days or so before my new insurance kicked in. I thought "Surely I can make it two months without severely injuring myself."

The same day I sliced my finger wide open with a knife in the garage. Some good ol super glue did the trick, though.

Not really. I walked around with a broken bone in my foot for a couple of weeks in college before finally going to the student health center for an x-ray. I thought I had just sprained it because I could still walk on it, though with a considerable limp. But even then, all they did was put a splint on it and told me to stay off of it for 2-3 weeks.

If you can walk you'll be fine. Just stay off it.

Sounds like a sprain. Do you have any bruising? Last time I sprained my ankle the the right side of my foot went purple.

Nope, no bruises. Just painful to walk. I think it's just a sprain

A third degree sprain can actually be worse than a break. And the X-Ray alone won't determine if there's ligament damage though. Rest, elevate, ice. If you're still having issues in 20 days, see the doctor then for more testing when insurance kicks in.

Feet are tricky. I've seen some people have a sprained ankle, and you'd think they are dying. They couldn't take a single step. Other folks can break a bone in their foot, and still walk with a limp.

I also saw my Pops break a foot and have to crawl around the house, up on the porch, and to the door. By the time he made it, his foot was already swelling and turning blue. My Mom took his boot off and said, "Well, it looks okay." Pops then said, "It is the other foot."

He broke two bones, had a bad sprain, and a small tear. He was laid up for a little while with that one.

Rolled my foot jogging. Foot turned purple, red, blue. Walked around for a week on it, kept telling myself every night, that when I wake up in the morning, would be better, wrong. After a week, my wife made me go to urgent care. It was broken. Walked around in a boot for 12 weeks.

Without an x Ray everybody is guessing

You can look up the Ottawa ankle rule for some insight, but X-ray is the standard

Happened to me a few month ago and I bought a walking boot for $30 and used for 6 weeks. Felt fine after that.
