Toys R Us closure could add stress to families, toy makers as liquidation sales begin Thursday.

The eventual shutdown of approximately 735 stores could negatively impact toy companies, both big and small. Toys R Us served as a place to test and see new toys, but toy makers will now have to find new places to sell their goods.

"I call Amazon our kryptonite," local toy store owner Steve Presser says. "It takes the whole fun out of the shopping experience."

The bigger toy makers, like Hasbro and Mattel, will likely have no trouble continuing sales through places like Walmart and Amazon. The lesser-known toy manufactures will be impacted more.

Families will also struggle with Toys R Us' closure. New and unique toys targeting kids from infants to teens will be more difficult to find without the shelf space Toys R Us provides.

"Families are not going to go out to shop, to walk the aisles, to hold the hands with your children and talk and play and say, 'I use to have that,'" Presser added. "That's all disappearing."

agree, there is something about actually going into a store and shopping, especially kids looking for toys.

Who didn't love going to the toy store as a kid?

Now you just give the kid a tablet and he picks out his toy on the screen? frick that.

It's not the 1940's anymore. These places deserve to die for their lack of evolving with the times.

While I agree with the sentiment, I don’t agree with the dramatic picture the author is painting that Toys R Us closing will add “stress” to the American family.

Best Buy still also has a showroom issue that pretty much did in Toy's R Us.

Amazon man...

People are weird though, give them 10-15 years and they will be begging for a Big Box again.

The times are changing and it is based on what the consumer wants. Based on the fact these stores are closing tells me the consumer doesn’t want to walk into that store.

The father in me is pissed because I now have to run to Walmart to get the random toy for that kids birthday party we forgot about.

Its 2018.

Kids watch youtube for kids and all the stupid unboxing videos now then ask their parents cor something.

Toys r Us was for special spur of the moment treats.

It drives me crazy when a local company will pick a platform then go on a rant about how Amazon/WalMart/etc. is killing them, yet they don't have a website, cost 30-40% more, and have a smaller selection.

There is a spot for small businesses, but if you choose to pretend you're still operating before the internet existed, you deserve to go out of business.

Screw even choosing a toy.

Child proceeds to closing said shopping app and then vegges out on YouTube Kids videos. No toy needed.

It is kind of like giving a kid a toy in a big box but playing with the box is more fun than the expensive toy that was in it.

You're right. But some of us did. And that's the sad part. I enjoyed taking my kids on a special day, after a dentist appt or a birthday for bigger stuff, and saying "Go pick something out" within a price range. Letting them wander around for an hour deciding what they want is a big part of being a kid.

I hope something can take it's place, even if a seasonal "toy store" business model becomes feasible. Like Halloween stores do now.

There is room in the market for quality toy stores.

Toys-R-Us needed to upgrade. I would take my kids to locally owned medium sized stores in Dallas. These stores provide a better experience.

I'm sure they were also hurt by the "check it out in the store, buy it online" crowd. If a store has good service (which probably doesn't mean T-R-U) and competitive prices, why not buy your item there?

Quite the conundrum they have presented here.

Families are going to miss out on shopping in a physical store because the physical stores are closing... but the reason they are closing is that fewer and fewer people are going to shop at the physical store.

Sucks for the few that did, but life isn't fair.

Now people would rather take their pets to a pet store than to take their kids to a toy store. I am not sure if that says more about parents these days or kids these days. Both???

I wonder what brands Toys R Us had that Walmart, Target or something of the like doesn't. I feel like they all have the same brands.

I agree with this. If those things were so prevalent, Toys R Us would still be in business.

As a kid, I do have fond memories of walking the aisles of a toy store just like I also have fond memories of going to the movie rental store once a weak to rent new games/movies, but time has moved on.

We never had a local Toys R Us in my home town though, so I have far more memories of browsing the toy aisles at my local Wal-Mart which obviously aren't going away for kids any time soon.

Not going to lie, I refuse to go shopping at a mall. When I think of hell, it involves spending time at a shopping mall. I'd much rather buy shite on the internet than spend an hour in traffic, and another hour wading through a sea of people just to buy a damn pair of Levi's.
