To be fair, you aren't supposed to just run them nonstop for several days.

You just answered your own question. So why make a useless thread?

Liquid cooled

frick that. They wanted like $32,000 to $35,000 for liquid cooled for my house. I don’t think it’s worth.

Why not consider Generac?
it’s not the generic of old… there’s more plastic loaded up in them now than a ticker tocker bimbo influencer

Generac is garbage. Kohler is the way to go. I have a 40kw Coleman 2001 model with a Chevy v-6 engine that runs like a champ. Unfortunately, they dont make them anymore. I also have a 25kw Katolite 2009 model that is exceptional as well with a 4 cylinder isuzi engine. It runs great, but I don’t know if they are still in business. Several of my neighbors have Generacs that were installed within the last 3-5 years. They have problems with them after running nonstop for a few days. I have been without power from hurricanes, once for 18 days and another for 16 days. They both ran without problems the entire time. When I have to replace them it will be with a Kohler.

I never had a problem with my 24 KW air cooled Generac in Baton Rouge and it ran for 5 days. I shut it off for about an hour a day at night and checked the oil then fired it back up. My neighbor had a liquid cooled and his shut off around midnight one night due to low oil. I gave him some oil and he was up and running again.

Kohler or Cummins

I had a liquid cooled picked out in 2021. By the time i was ready to install in 2022 the price went from 8k to 15k for the unit. Don’t know what the hell happened but the price since then has been 2x to upgrade to liquid cooled. Needless to say, I have a 20kW air cooled Kohler.

Yeah that’s probably what the Generac owner’s manual says, but fortunately I don't have one. My manuals give no such caution. I just change the oil at 250 hours and crank them up again.

Having a water cooled premium 25+kW generator for a home backup is silly. We're talking about something that will average maybe 30 hours a year, worse case, as hurricane backup power.

Sure, a 30kW water cooled Cummins is premium but its probably going to cost $30k by the time its all said and done.

An 18kW air cooled rig is plenty good enough if you take half assed care of it.

Honda doesn’t make a home standby generator. They make inverter generators and portables. They used to make engines for Generac but Genearac started making their own engines years ago. That is when Generac went to shite.

We went with 26kw Generc looking and comparing. A good friend of us actually own an a generic distributor ship. Feel confident in product we got and service will get .
Got it in spring finally had to use it the other day for a couple hours.

Generator wasn’t the problem demco was when lights came back on and several house on street were only at about 66% power in house lights dimmed etc apparently switched feed could handle the load …never experienced that before

“They(Honda) used to make motors for Generac”

I didn’t know that. That explains a lot, people that had older Generacs had good luck with them.Last 5 years or so I hear a lot of bad stories about them failing.Guy up the road had a Generac Hurricane Laura it failed after about 3 hours.

Cummins, Briggs or Kohler are all quality. I went with Cummins and have had zero issues and we lose power quite a bit.

Liquid cooled is the best. If you can only afford an air cooled one the Briggs with the Vanguard Marine engine is a durable beast.

Here's how I know. I helped a friend in Spring Texas pick out and spec out a home standby genset. I looked at Kohler and other brands. Kohler is real good. But I was also interested in a great dealer that would give here great service since she was getting old and had health problems.

I found a Briggs dealer in the area that had a good reputation for service. So my background is automotive and new that a lot of generators fail before you really need them and that the 2 critical things are a robust commercial grade engine and good service.

So when Beryl hit the area last year Center Point screwed the pouch and aover a million customers were without power. My friends Briggs ran constantly for 8 days hard. She kept her AC on the whole time. After 8 days it shut off because of the low oil sensor. She called me here in Louisiana so I tried the com[any's service line but all of their customers were calling for help and zi couldn't get thru. I was about to jump in my truck and drive there when one of their service guys calls me. They got a code from her unit about low oil cut off on her unit and he was on the way.

He filled it up with oil and had it tunning again until the power came back on.

There is no doubt in my mind she would have not made it without that Vanguard engine and a good service company.

Thanks for being patient with my story.
