Shreveport moved one step closer to securing a long-sought law school late Monday when the Louisiana House approved a bill by Rep. Cedric Glover to explore its feasibility with Southern University's backing.

The House voted 98-0 for House Concurrent Resolution 24 by Glover, D-Shreveport, which would ask the Louisiana Board of Regents to study the viability of a law school in Shreveport.

quote:

Glover told his colleagues in the House the Caddo Parish Commission has committed at least $100,000 toward conducting the study, showing that "we have skin in the game" back home.

During the previous debate in the House Education Committee Southern Law Center Chancellor John Pierre offered his "full support" of the law school study.

Yeah, I always think to myself - We don't have enough universities in this state.

Meanwhile, Fox news reports that we have enough law schools and enough lawyers.

I mean, increasing access to law school for lower tier students via an existing low tier law school

what's not to like

Do we need more lower tiered students becoming lawyers?

Better Call Saul!

It’s ok. They’ll only add about three lawyers a year. Everyone knows southern grads can’t pass the bar.

Seems like you elite, prestigious, Order of the Coif insurance defense attorneys from Tulane and LSU would relish the opportunity to beat up on more lowly Southern grads bringing shitty PI cases

How else are you going to make partner at Taylor Porter unless you're billing 2200 a year?

Sweet!

More lawyers that will struggle to find jobs because there aren’t enough law jobs to fill the graduates

I'm against adding another law school, but I don't see how SUNO's undergraduate grad rate is relevant.

That's like mentioning LSU-Alexandria's grad rate in a discussion about LSU med school.

Law schools are closing left and right because of the bar passage rates being piss poor and the lack of quality students, yet they want to open another law school?

Plus, the historically black universities with law schools have done awful on the bar exams and risk losing their ABA accreditation.

I assume this will just be a quick study -- a real waste of $100k to conduct it though. Someone's brother must be making that money.

Is this happening?

Great news, if so

How are we so poor and dumb and ignorant as a state but have so many universities? Why are republican lead governments continually increasing the size of govt thru more tax payer funded public universities?

We should shut down several schools in Louisiana and get our budget in order — we have an oil abundance but we’re poor as shite? So much for “fiscally conservative” ideals
