do you think making drugs illegal prevents people from obtaining drugs?

your INTENT may be to prevent more infections in the US, just like the intent of making drugs illegal is to prevent drug use/abuse/crime but people will still be free to travel from west africa to other parts of the world and come in contact with people who will travel to America

look at arguments against gun control and drug laws.

If Europe or SA doesn't have the same ban what is to stop someone getting infected there and then traveling to the US?

Two healthcare workers get sick from one ebola case in which the patient died.....

That's a pretty crappy outcome for a developed country.

And the hospital spokesman just said that 70 medical personnel treated Duncan and they're "expecting" more people to become infected. See that word expecting? That's concerning.

Terrible analogy. Ebola isn't all over the world and easily accessible.

What if it slows this down from getting and spreading to the U.S.? Isn't that beneficial? If a cure/vaccine is 2 months away, the fewer who have it here prior to then, the easier it can be eradicated.

RC - I'm not sure if you got the memo or whatever, but we prefer "nuked the fridge" now - although the archaic "jumped the shark" is still valid.

What is the harm is placing a ban on travel from Africa? It's not like we're going to be spending billions waging a war on travel from west Africa (to use your drug analogy). It's seems very simple - you can't travel to America from west Africa. And guess what, if that doesn't work, it's not like we wasted time, energy, or resources that could have been dedicated to finding a cure or way to stop the spread of Ebola.

So this stuff is pretty easy to catch right? I mean, 2 people wearing PPE got it from this guy. Even if they just broke protocol, it must be easily transmitted if you can get it from just taking your gloves and mask off in the wrong order.

what's the harm in doing a lot of things?

If justification for doing something is simply, "what's the harm?" I dont know what to tell you.

I am contending that simply banning people from coming to America with a west african passport or stamp will not prevent further infections in America. Unless there is some sort of worldwide ban or some major quarantine in west africa

So the patients from Dallas scatter, presumptively, at least a few are positive, exposing others and so-forth.

It seems like the hay in the barn is lit now, or is this over blown thinking?

You're argument is silly and not even remotely comparable. We aren't talking sociological issues and crime, we're talking transmission of communicable diseases.

You wash your hands all the time, right? Does it 100% prevent you from getting germs? No, but I'm sure you still do it anyways because it does reduce the effects. We can't control what other countries do, but yet the only confirmed case in the US of A was directly from the source and could have easily been prevented had a travel ban been in place. With the incubation periods of the virus, these people would be getting sick other places aside from a hospital in Dallas.

What if I routinely travel to W Africa for work? As an American citizen, should I not be allowed back into the country?

Once non-health care workers get diagnosed and this stuff is out in the general population, they'll have a big problem on their hands.

Comparing policies on a deadly disease to drug use, which is a choice, is a dumb analogy.

obviously not 100% and no one is saying that

but I guarantee it would reduce further infections
