Last night, the wife and I were woken by the sound of a huge thud around 1:30 AM. Heard the sound, grabbed my gun and was confronted by a guy standing in my living room stumbling around using his phone as a flashlight.

The guy was some beyond drunk frat star that we think came through our basement crawl space and into the kitchen; all doors and windows were locked so we’re still not sure exactly how he got in. He just kept saying he was “just going to head to the back to sleep and don’t worry about it”. Totally incoherent, didn’t seem to care at all that he had a gun shoved in his chest. Cops came and picked him up.

That being said, we need alarm recommendations. Something that would alert us before someone is physically in the home. Cloud DVR, doorbell video and monitored preferably. The home is a 118 year old historical home so something minimally invasive would be best.

Sux to hear man. Go to the Tech board plenty of threads to read thru on all of these.

On this board you'll get: shotgun and "no pics of wife in nightgown" downvotes

Alarms don't go off before something happens. Maybe you mean motion activated lights and cameras? But alarms trip once something is opened or broken. If you had alarms that went off every time something was outside like a cat or raccoon the cops would be over weekly.

I'd get motion activated lights and get better locks first.

I've had SimpliSafe for 2.5 years and really like it. Install yourself, $15 a month.

Ring

Alarm + Doorbell + Floodlight cams

High price to buy everything at first, but only $10 a month fully monitored. Internet connection first, LTE cellular backup. Battery backup on alarm devices built in.

All wireless, so very minimally invasive to the home.

Have a install review on the tech board thread when they first came out.

OP, get yourself a dog to start with. Best early detection alarm.

Cheap fix is to get a big dog. I have two dogs. If you sneeze outside, I’ll know. I can’t reccomend alarms, but if you stick an ADT sign in your front yard, that is enough. Burglars look for easy houses. ADT signs and big dogs are basically automatic turn offs.

If it’s easy enough to get into your place that a blind drunk frat boy did it without leaving any signs of entry, I’d focus on the physical security of the house first. Locks

Because that would open a big of can of worms. If he shot and killed that guy, he could lose everything. He said himself it was just a drunk frat boy. How would that play in court?

I’m not defending the frat dumbass. Don’t be a moron. But, that would not have been a good shooting. He may have been legally and technically justified, but he could have been hung out to dry in a civil suite.
