The guy was some beyond drunk frat star that we think came through our basement crawl space and into the kitchen; all doors and windows were locked so we’re still not sure exactly how he got in. He just kept saying he was “just going to head to the back to sleep and don’t worry about it”. Totally incoherent, didn’t seem to care at all that he had a gun shoved in his chest.
Was his last name Kavanaugh?

Sorry to hear, but glad you didn’t shoot him. Sounds like he was really disoriented.

Daily reminder of why it is important to have alarm system BEFORE you need it. OP will probably never have another incident like this; but crazy to think what would happen if the guy was not drunk and armed himself.

PSA: get a security system before you need it

You did the right thing by not shooting him even though it would have been justifiable.

Now do the next right thing and force him to get some help for his problem by way of tbe legal system. It's up to him to get it, but you will be doing your part

I wouldn’t go that far. People make mistakes. No need to make a mountain out of a molehill. He didn’t get shot, he wasn’t trying to hurt anyone, make sure he understands how badly this could have went and move on. But, it’s up to the OP. He can very well press charges if he wants.

basement in Baton Rouge? Been in BR since 1975 - never seen a house with a basement. I guess it's a first for errding.

There are at least a few houses in BR with basements...I knew someone in the Garden District who had one.

But looking at the OP's post history, I think he just moved to Memphis.

If you have a single entry point into your yard, get a Guardline driveway alarm and a dog that barks when it goes off. They're very loud inside

Or maybe he wasn't a drunk frat boy but checking the place out to rob it. Did he take pictures with that phone and did he send them to his buddies?

Your trust level is not at New Orleans homeowner level.

I wouldn’t bet on it. It takes much less to win a civil suite than a criminal trial.

one of my buddies did this blackout drunk one night where he passed out in some random dudes kitchen down Burbank. Was woken up by some Asian dude straight off the boat poking him with a cane in his chest.

Why didnt you kill the mother fricker?

So when he realized he was just some drunken non-threatening frat star, he was supposed to just unload his handgun into his head? what the hell is wrong with you. I hope you don’t have any kids, you sound like a borderline psychopath who gives gun owners a pretty bad name. And it kinda worries me you have more upvotes then downvotes...but you don’t hear too many news stories of something like that happening so you’re probably just all talk anyway which is a relief

We recently moved to Memphis, as in a week ago recently. We have a German Shepard and a Boxer, however both are with my parents until next weekend as we just got the furniture delivered Friday.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! No, I didn’t shoot him. He wasn’t a violent threat just a complete dumbass and I couldn’t live with that on my conscious knowing he wasn’t harmful to us, just fricking stupid.

he could have been hung out to dry in a civil suite.

That boy was working on his GED, and thinking about going to college. Wanted to get a job as an operator so he would be able to send all six of his kids to college too. Was about to move them out of an apartment, into a house. You took all of that away from them.
