BATON ROUGE - A woman was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Thursday after killing her neighbor in 2024 following an argument.

WBRZ previously reported that Angelique Chatman was arrested for second-degree murder after she killed Sirena Franklin along Tigerland Avenue. Baton Rouge Police officers said Franklin was walking away as she was shot by Chatman.

Court records show that Chatman was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

BR woman shot and killed neighbor.

Facial tats with teardrops of course.

I’m confused: I thought no one ever got arrested in Baton Rouge. And if they do get arrested, they get a crazy low bond. And they certainly aren’t prosecuted. And if they are prosecuted, it gets reduced to a misdemeanor and probation. OP can’t be accurate

It seems as though most 2nd degree murder charges are reduced to manslaughter in EBRP to avoid life without. Isn't that pretty common during plea negotiations in BR?

me, too
I learned today women do not get proper sentencing when they are convicted of a crime

So a woman to get 25 years in Baton Rouge - so many miracles.

I don’t know the numbers, so I can’t confirm “most”, but it’s common. You can’t negotiate sentencing on a second degree murder, so if there are potential issues with the state’s case (and there were in this one), then Manslaughter and a number is the obvious middle ground for a resolution.

That happens until they get to murder. Once they kill somebody it becomes serious.

Not according to TD. In nearly every thread about a murder arrest, there’s a chorus of people saying everything I said above.

As I’ve said many times, it’s not actually the reality, but that’s never stopped the peanut gallery

The deceased was shot in the back which was determined by BRPD what issues with this case are you referring to?

About half an hour before, the deceased had attacked her repeatedly, including hitting her with a shovel. Obviously not self defense, but not an unreasonable argument for Manslaughter. Both sides would have been fighting over whether “a reasonable person’s blood would have cooled” during that time period based on the circumstances, which would have bored a jury to tears.

If there was a battery that occurred during the altercation that is one thing, but from what I have gathered from various news sources the deceased was shot in the back while walking away along Tigerland avenue. Seems plausible for a second degree murder charge without there being a plea.

When you have a face made for prison you’ll eventually get there.
