If you want to know why St George is a thing, here’s just a little more evidence. Remember when my SG tax dollars were going to fund dumb shite like this? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

No traffic lights and no exits from Walker to downtown BR, and call it the Red Stick NASCAR Super Expressway. It would be full of downtown state workers driving $80k vehicles while living in double-wide trailers.

shite that supposedly benefits NBR and is subject to sweetheart construction contracts? fricking shocker.

And, in true government fashion, no one thought to add bus pull-ins to this project in order to make it easier and safer for busses to stop and pick up passengers along Florida.
While the drainage is needed, the extra-wide sidewalk isn't. The vast majority of people I see walking in conjunction with Florida are walking across it, not along it and the project does nothing to address that.
All that said, any work on Florida should have gone toward expanding the Airline-Amite corridor first (especially Airline-Sherwood) as that's where the continually worst of the Florida bottleneck is.

It’s probably to accommodate the mobility impaired.
While driving through BR a couple of years ago, my Waze took me through north BR to avoid the interstate traffic.
I was amazed at the 10’ wide sidewalks in that area. It made me wonder why that area. A disproportionate ratio of wheelchairs and motorized scooters per capita made sense.
Why? I just figured shootings and diabetes.
That is probably the same reasoning behind widening Florida Blvd.

It's been awhile since I looked at ADA guidelines for sidewalks, but I'm pretty sure they only have to include a 5x5-foot passing zone for wheelchairs every so often. I'm not sure where the 10-foot width is coming from

Well, sorry to have to break it to you but, St. George is still in EBR Parish. So you're still paying the 1/2% Parish wide MOVEBR sales tax.

Are ADA guidelines minimum standards or maximum?
10 feet just could be a whimsical thing because grandma, Scooby, and Peanut once vented about it during a Mother’s
Day get together.

Don’t want the hookers getting hit

The new street gutters arent going into any drainage system
They are just holes in the curb with a lid, going on to the sidewalk.
Makes zero sense. All the water from 3 lanes of road will be directed onto the sidewalks

They're minimums, but even the recommended width is only 5'. 10' would be comically wide

quote:10’ shared-use path is part of DOTD minimum design guidelines for complete streets policy. A certain amount of boxes have to be checked to accommodate bikes and pedestrians now. If not, it needs a design exception. This has been in place for a while now for pretty much all urban projects on state routes or using federal funds. A big reason why you’re seeing so many pedestrian improvements nowadays.

Usually bikes can be accommodated on a 4’ shoulder, and a 5’ sidewalk is sufficient for peds.
But I think the point of securing fed funds for this project was to deliver a full shared use path to accommodate everyone since Florida was mostly curb and gutter with no shoulders.

Ahh you're right. I didn't consider that they're going for full shared use path/complete streets with this.

Haven’t been to BR in a minute. But haven’t they had issues with grass mowing for green spaces/ medians lately ? You know…a super basic service that makes any city look like it kinda has its shite together?? $60 million could cut a lot of grass, pave a lot of streets, fill potholes…I could go on. But spending it on sidewalks??

10 foot wide sidewalks on this stretch of road? Really?
You will all be excited to know that it looks like there will also be enough room for a new BICYLE LANE!

Yea it’s aggravating having to try to work it into every urban project. Sometimes it’s just not feasible.
But yea I think it was probably part of the description for applying for these fed grants. That the scope would be to do a complete streets, large ped improvement project.
Now whether it’s actually needed or not, idk. Should be supported by traffic studies and crash history.

At least it's a local BR design consultant.
The construction contractor is Hard Rock Construction out of Harvey, Louisiana.
