Capital Region moves a step closer in quest to get a new Mississippi River bridge

quote:

The House and Senate overwhelmingly approved Senate Bill 496—creating a five-parish regional authority that, among other things, will be tasked with finding a way to finance a new bridge—and sent it to Gov. John Bel Edwards’ desk for final approval. The governor is expected to make a decision next week, and the prospects look favorable.

quote:

The regional authority, dubbed the Capital Area Road and Bridge District, would have the power to implement tolls, impose parcel fees or levy taxes—subject to voter approval in the five parishes: East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Ascension, Iberville and Livingston.

I would support a toll bridge.
quote:

Language in the bill allows the district a variety of funding options, from tolls to four taxing options: levying ad valorem, or property, taxes; imposing an annual parcel fee not to exceed $500; levying a sales tax not to exceed 1%; or issuing bonds secured by ad valorem and sales taxes. Voters in each parish must approve any new taxes or fees.

I'll vote against a new property tax.

My guess is that it will never pass the voters of the 5 parish region unless it's funded exclusively by tolls. No word on where they want to build it but it would have to be south of BR to have any impact on traffic. I'll probably be retired by the time it's finished (if it ever passes).

This is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

You want BR to grow but don't want to do what it takes.

BR needs a combo of funds and it all can't come from a Toll. The maximum charge is $500, yet better infrastructure can bring you jobs that pay thousands more.

Yall have no nuts.

The article spells it out for you. To give the 5 parish area affected actual power to do something.

It's good ole La politics but this is the right direction. I'm down.
I'll vote for a tax to cancel the OP's No.

But what would we call the new bridge if we got a new bridge?????

I own 2 BR properties and I'd still be totally okay with a property tax to help fund a new bridge.

Traffic is BR's biggest issue with crime being #2. Id put up some money to fix those.

Property taxes are bullshite. It means that you never own your home. The only taxes that I support are sales taxes and maybe a gas tax or toll. Everyone gets to share in the fun

I'm afraid it's going to be yet another study. What good is a bridge when there's no consensus for roads that feed it? We've had so many loop studies without strong support for one alternative.
