Tunnel me bro!

quote:

Why not tunnel under Mississippi instead?
Why can’t the state of Louisiana build a tunnel under the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge instead of a bridge that will destroy the historic cypress forests?
Many countries worldwide have built large underwater tunnels able to handle large amounts of traffic and not destroy the environment.
New York City built one in the city and did not disrupt traffic.
I suggest the Louisiana Department of Transportation or someone take the time to explore this method of crossing the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge.

Is that an advocate link I'll just assume there's a paywall and not tap it.

ETA right off the bat I don't know how possible it is then again I'm not an engineer by any means. If it could be done under Mobile Bay then this would have to be scaled way way up to be safe.

The miss isn't just a calm flowing or steady river it's a massive ordeal with currents flowing in any direction in real time not to mention an unreal amount of water

I took the tunnel under the Detroit river heading into Canada one time and remember thinking to myself why doesn't Baton Rouge do this. The Detroit river isn't quite as big as the Mississippi river but it isn't that far off either.

It was completed in 1930 and at its deepest is 75 feet and is 5,160 feet long. Was completed in two years. If they could do that all that in 1930 then we can do it in 2026.

Okay, okay, then hear me out.

What about avoiding all those obstacles by putting the tunnel...on top of the water?

Why not a second story interstate with no exits until out of EBRP?

Seems like they could have built an elevated expressway over/next to existing interstate.

It would have been costly, but had they done this thirty years ago, likely less expensive than now with less hold ups selecting routes and acquiring property.

Mobile's tunnels were actually built above ground, in a nearby shipyard, delivered by barge to the Mobile River, then sunk. They don't actually go "under" the river, per se. They just sit on the bottom.

The Mississippi is 100 feet deep in some places. It would be damn near an English Channel Tunnel effort.... the pumps and maintenance would be expensive too.

The bridge isn't difficult if the politicians find some balls and just pick an alignment. They are trying to make everyone happy with where it's placed. We never would have finished the Interstate system with that mentality.
