Boy Scouts May File for Bankruptcy Reorganization

The Scouts, like many other large civic organizations, have had declining membership, in the face of more options for kids these days.
Also, like many other organizations, claims from 20-40 years ago can bankrupt them. Even though today's Scouts have no problems whatsoever with abuse. The training and background process has gotten so much stronger over the years.
I don't think this is the end of the road for the Scouts. But, administratively, they need to do some things different. There are tons of ways they can cut costs.

The Boy Scouts of America deflected a report that the youth group might file for bankruptcy protection in the face of increasing sexual misconduct litigation, saying "no imminent actions or immediate decisions" are expected. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that the youth organization was considering bankruptcy in the face of dwindling membership and mounting legal costs. The law firm Sidley Austin LLP was hired to explore options, the newspaper reported.

I was wondering when they were going to add the Chapter 11 badge.

They should have let Scoutmasters marry.

It all went down hill after they let the women in

They did it to themselves. I raised two Eagles, and when BSA decided to violate their own standards and openly allow gays into its ranks, it was the beginning of the end. They had just won the right to choose their own membership in a long fought legal battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court, and then caved into special interest groups. From there it only got worse.

Maybe they should sell something better than shitty popcorn.

I'm curious what your sons have to say. I'm an Eagle. I believe that if you truly live the life of an Eagle, then you can't discriminate against "gays" or any other group.
BSA was put into a tough spot financially. Allow "gays" in, and lose people like you and the Mormons. Don't allow "gays" in, and lose corporate donations and facility access.
You could also argue that not letting in "gays" had a direct lead into the sexual assault issues. Just like with the Catholic church, hardline approaches tend to backfire.

Morality isn't popular anymore.

They are both disgusted by the path BSA is taking. I guess you skipped over the "keep myself morally straight" part when reciting the Scout Oath.

Can't afford to cover up years of kiddie diddling without Vatican level financing.

There is nothing "immoral" about being gay.
It's not the lifestyle I want, but it's not immoral.
The child molesters that BSA let in weren't very moral either. But yet, you aren't talking about that part of this situation. Why is that?

That's what happens when you harbor child molesters.

Even the Vatican is starting to cut off the money stream. Dioceses are starting to file.

Yup. That happened many years ago. Decades. And today is paying the price.

Yep. The Santa Fe Archdiocese just filed this month.

Is it really discrimination when a private club (one with fees and a structure) allows to base membership on whatever factors they want?

Maybe if everyone stopped making every choice/purchase/decision a reflection of some political stance, which is driven by people harassing organizations, then said organizations caving in, we wouldn't be putting companies in disadvantageous conditions to have to make said decisions.
By caving to one group, instead of staying core to their mission, they made it impossible for other groups to support them. You don't think that's messed up to begin with? And way more messed up than who the BSA was before all of this. Having to force relatively successful organizations to do what you want via bullying is where we are though.

Well, that’s certainly one opinion...
