Do not ever buy from Walmart. They sell what is called "Retail" packs. Retail packs do not contain any autograph, jersey, or rookie cards. They are basic with no value.

What you want to buy is "Hobby" packs. These are sold at local card shops or Ebay. You can't buy "Hobby" packs at Walmart or Target.

Basically, you bought a worthless pack. Next time buy Hobby, not Retail.

You have to be willing to spend lots of money for it to be a profitable venture. If you are just into the hobby and like to collect, then you can buy whatever at Walmart.

What I’ve started doing with junk era cards is sending them through the mail to get autographed. It’s a fun hobby that allows me to reconnect with my youth a bit.

I have some Derek Jeter Mint Rookie Cards I bought when I collected, not sure what they are worth now. I hope my parents didn't throw them out either because they are still at their house.

I pulled a Felix Hernandez auto rookie. I pulled a Mark Teixeir auto rookie. I used to have a Robinson Cano auto rookie but have no idea where it went.

You will never pull an autograph or jersey card if you opened up every single Walmart or Target pack because they sell "Retail" packs.

I collected seriously for years. I know this for a fact. "Retail" packs are different than "Hobby" packs. Walmart and Target only sell "Retail" packs.

You have to go to a local card shop or Ebay for a "Hobby" pack. Hobby packs sell the autograph and jersey and more valuable cards.

I know. I’m at the point now where I just buy what I want on eBay unless I’m just itching to bust open a pack.

Don't say "never". I pulled a McCutchen auto from a Target blaster box.....but that was several years ago.

Well this just isn't true, it just depends on the set. Other than there is in fact a difference, but plenty of retail blasters and megas guarantee autos. One of the better value sets in recent years if you could find them was the 2020 Prizm megas from Target that guaranteed one auto per box. You could get a mega for $50 with one guaranteed auto and you'd spend close to 1k on a hobby and only have two guaranteed autos.

Last pack I bought was in 1957, The bubble gum was pretty tasty. I have no idea who was on the card. Probably clothes pinned it to the front fork of my bike. They made a nice Bbbbbbbrrrrrrr sound. Had some great times on that bike.

I remember when I was a kid, I'd save up for the complete year set of Topps. Then of course I'd pick out the rookies and then bring some to school and then leave some on the counter next to my dinner plate then leave some outside. Then it didn't really matter because some were missing or wet or bent, etc..

But today - how do you even do it? How do you know what to buy?

How do I buy the entire yearly set? And is Topps worth a shite anymore? Is it all Panini now? Does Upper Deck still exist? Donruss? Score?

this was my experience. Guy offered me like 72.59 for em. I was floored.

What’s the price of a pack of cards these days? I haven’t bought any since they were .25 a pack.

Really? I'm just a caveman. Your world of online pricing guides and apps frightens and confuses me.

I just read this whole thread, many people commenting on how much the hobby changed over the years but not much further explanation.

I also have seen people refer to the era I collected as the junk era, which I had never heard but realized after the fact that too many were made that made them worth a whole lot less. But then this thread seems to agree that the stuff sold at major retailers is essentially junk, so not sure how it has changed?

I had some good stuff back in the day, but no idea what happened to my best stuff. I’m like the guy that thought he had $2,500 worth of stuff except never got the chance to try to sell them. I suspect my brother sold them for beer money years ago.
