They retired the old clunky one they have been working on for years

After 11 years, Boston Dynamics is saying goodbye to Atlas, the humanoid robot best known for its (somewhat unsettling) dance sequences and impressive backflips. In a video posted on YouTube, the robotics company says it’s time for its hydraulic bot to “kick back and relax” in retirement.

Robots on the big screen are cool.

We're so fricked as a species and we're just continually digging this AI grave.
These humanoid robots with next generation AI. What are we thinking?
Goldblum knew.

I wonder if they'll wipe away all evidence of our existence?

The video in your link, "Atlas Struts"...
Anyway, as these get better these robots will be great for fast food, assembly lines, and other menial repetitive task.
They surely will be able to offer better service than Wendy's, Popeye's or McDonalds'. But Chick Fil A?

I work I'd in 3-D materials sector. Had an informal interview with a 3-D scanning company one day. They brought out their toys to show me how they scan entire plants from slab to smoke stack. One was one of those robot dogs the police and military use now. I've seen and read about them countless times, but that first time it rounded a corner, scanned me and went on about its mechanical way gave me chills.

Well at least they don’t run on human flesh yet.

It's in all likelihood the entire reason this species exists. Homo Sapiens are likely just a caterpillar stage for whatever our evolution is making. Not many species stay the same and survive. And we're a species that has eyes on the stars. Which means we will have to survive in the most inhospitable environs possible. This machine we're all sitting in is made for inside the atmosphere of earth. Anything else and it dies and you move on to wherever the next step is for your soul.
Being a meat eating bipedal murder-monkey is a great strategy for taking over this planet. Not so much for interstellar travel. Unless we change the body of course.
It's unnerving to think about. And I'm sure I'll get downvoted to pieces, and normally I'd agree with you. But we're going to have to adapt if we're going to get off this planet and spread the species. You are not your body. It's an elegant device for keeping a soul in this particular spot in the universe. If God made that for you, why would you be restricted to that if he also made you intelligent enough to become a multiplanet species? Yeah there's a lot of scary shite about it. But what isn't scary about this life?

Do you want Skynet?
Because, this is how you get Skynet.

I get they want them to be relatable, but really designing a robot to be like a human outside of the hands doesn't make a lot of sense.
Give them 8 arm/legs where they can stand up or crawl around like a spider and hold multiples tools, etc.

I hope Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics are built into these creatures.

People really need to brush up on the movie I, Robot. It lays it out perfectly.

Are you aware of Figure? They are the real competition to Tesla and they've partnered with OpenAI, Microsoft and NVidia recently. The Figure 01's most recent demo after adding OpenAI AI to the mix was pretty impressive. Robots look ahead of schedule and I would not be surprised if they start becoming available for home use by the end of the decade.
