Is booksack a louisiana thing? Whenever my girlfriend catches me saying it she gives me shite. She's from north FL. I'm from Laffy area.

I think we said bookbags as kids, but then it became backpack.

I've never heard booksack until this thread.

Must be at least a south LA thing. New Iberia here and it's booksack.

I knew a dude in college that called it a backsack.

Not sure when kids started carrying backpacks to school, but in the rural areas that I grew up, it was after I graduated high school. Growing up, the only time we used backpacks was camping or hiking.

I never saw anyone carrying a backpack around a campus until 1978 when I was a freshman at LSU. Of course, now, every kid has one.

I grew up in PA in the 1960's--NOBODY used a backpack. We called them bookbags and we carried them. I remember when backpacks came around and I remember thinking "DOH!!! why didn't they think of that when I was a kid??"
