The only people I saw using backpacks at LSU in 1979 were foreign students.
I had a knapsack in the 90's that I carried to LSU & Ranger games. It was canvas, but it had a leather bottom. Had straps like a backpack, but it was round. It had a drawstring on top and a flap that strapped over it. Was perfect for sitting in Tiger Stadium and the old Arlington Stadium bleachers. Spilled drinks did not soak through that leather bottom.

Always a bookbag or school bag for me, mainly because when I was in school we did not use backpacks. Most used plastic duffel type bags, but smaller, with handles.
ALmost something like this old Adidas bag, but had out high school logo on it.
