Politicians will not flood their hunting properties. That's why it's hardly been opened.

It's been opened a lot in the last 10 years. It was opened 5 times in 5 years from 2016-2020. Bonnet Carre has some pretty strict rules way above the pay grade of some local politician.

There are three feet to every yard, nine feet to every cubic yard. So an acre-foot is nine cubic yards on one-ninth of an acre. That is what they are going by.

Remember salt water is heavier than fresh water. A tongue shape wedge moves up river AT DEPTH when the fresh flow starts.

The intake for Parish water supplies happens at depth.

You'll also hear when experts think it;s time to build a soil levee across the depth of the river to keep the tongue from moving up river in times of drought for the fresh water.

Mississippi would rather flood New Orleans then destroy their ecosystem

Wrong spillway

You're thinking of Morganza

The majority of the water here comes down the Ohio River.

More likely Old River Control Structure will send extra water down the Atchafalaya Flood Basin

Cool story bro, but I was hiking the spillway once during a heavy rain and I heard the sirens start going. I ran my arse through the woods, got like 18 golden orb weavers attached to me/dog, lost my mind because I hate spiders, and still barely got to my car with the water halfway up my tires.

I’m hearing they’re going to have to open the Morganza spillway too.

Morganza should always be opened first.

The river has to be much higher to trigger a Morganza opening and it impacts way more people than a Bonnet Carre opening, which impacts 0 outside of Mississippi cry babies.

They should both be opened as little as possible. Bonnet Carre is becoming too much of a crutch for New Orleans so they can put off any long term river management because they think Bonnet Carre will always save them. They think, 17 feet? Crank it open. Instead of how can we better manage the river. 5 openings in 5 years from 2016-2020. It was opened 10 times in 80 years before that.

Good news is, we don't have to hear about the salt water wedge panic...

Good news is that there isn't a lot of snow melt this year. If we had that, it could have been worse. A week of rain will cause a rise, but not a flood.

bullshite. Morganza floods a bunch of farmland.

Bonnet Carre wipes out salt water wildlife off the coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, and even into Alabama.

Well. Yeah.

Flushing out NOLA would be a good outcome for everyone.
