Again, if you perceive that your life is endangered or someone else life is endangered and that perception is reasonable....you are justified in using lethal force.
That is the litmus test.
It is the same for police and citizens.
There is no higher standard.

If I have an argument with someone and I kill them and then told the police "well he went into his pocket and pulled out a black colored object so it was in self defense" they would laugh at me and throw me in jail for murder
