re: Bob Dylan Wins Nobel Prize for Literature!

Only argument is that is song writing really "literature". Obviously it's a form of poetry which would be considered literature. But would Dylan's works be known if he didn't sing them? Not sure. But in terms of quality and impact, he's on the level of a Hemmingway or Kipling in my opinion. He's just in a different "medium" I guess, so you don't think of him the same way.

FYI I finished Jenkins biography of Churchill this month and have read every single Hemingway short story. I've read a day in the life of Iva denisovich, etc. If you don't think Dylan had an equivalent impact on American songwriting you're a fricking tard, no matter how profound you think your library is.

Nobel Lit is always body of work

Pulitzer is for this year's works.

Dylan is a huge Woody Guthrie fan, and most would agree he was a great song writer, but can you name 10 Woody Guthrie songs off the top of your head? I know I personally can't and neither can most people. I know that doesn't mean anything, but genius only goes so far if no one knows about you (obviously people know Guthrie, but not to the extent of Dylan). Hell, people don't know Dylan Thomas as much as they know Dylan and it's where he got his name!

That's another interesting thing about ole Zimmerman. He pretty much created his "character" from scratch. He's your everyday typical Midwestern kid who moved to NYC and became this caricature of folk scene myth. It's pretty much an act.

His book Chronicles is a really interesting read. They've got stuff in there of him going to find songs that Woody Guthrie told him he could have but couldn't find, only for it to be found and recorded years later by Wilco. Also, he spends time recording in NOLA later in his career and he just rides his motorcycle down to places like Raceland and he talks about it. It's really interesting.

Hemingway supported the loyalists during the Spanish Civil War. Does that mean I don't think he deserved the Nobel?
