Should be mandatory to get behind a wheel. Some jackass casued over 30k in damage to a friends boat in Destin.

Friend was heading out to the Gulf through the pass and some idiot leaving crab island (whos never driven a boat) T-bones him IN A NO WAKE ZONE!

The rental companys insurance pays for it and the driver loses his deposit.

I recommend the first time to launch, you go to Fred's in Port Vincent around 5 PM on a Saturday. There's always guys there who can tell you what you're doing wrong and never help.

I have no issues launching/loading but my anxiety shoots up when I have to deal with this shite.

I never launch at Fred's unless it's a week day. 20 people took video of that guy sinking his truck, but I didn't see many people running out to the ramp to help him. Sad world.

I'll go to Canal Bank or St James on weekends.

There is a website called Miami boat launch it will show you what not to do

Watch a few hours of this then go practice on several different ramps on weekdays.

If you're not used to backing a trailer, first go to an empty parking lot and practice backing straight into parking spots at different slight angles.

Step one, attach a trailer to your ride and take it everywhere with you so you get proficient at backing up a trailer. You'll be doing yourself a favor and also everyone else.

Nothing pisses off other boaters more than someone that can't back up a trailer. Get good at backing up, and also good at just taking up one slot at that ramp rather than launching crooked and blocking access for others.

Also, have the boat ready to launch before you even back down the ramp. Have the plug in, straps and motor support removed. Get good at the launch and the rest is easy.

Start with the Wildlife and Fisheries course. Go in person, don't be lazy and do it online.

Agree. Take a good course and do it in person. My friends all took the 1 hour BS course and my parents made me take the accredited coast guard course that took 2-3 hours per week every weds for like 2 months. It was a really good thing, especially if you want to get out on open water.

Where you located, Bruh? If you're in metro New Orleans...I'd be happy to help. I'm always looking for an excuse to drop mine in the water.

Sorry baw. This is a Louisiana based message board. We all learned how to launch and run a boat before we learned how to drive on a road.

This is true.

Ask friends for help if they have boats. My dad taught us to back up the trailer young by going in the parking lot at home depot late at night and setting up cones for us to back into, definitely don't learn at the ramp. Know what a true no wake is, too many people go slow, plow and throw a giant wake.

I used to read and idiot's guide to boating every winter the first few years of me running a boat and it gave great knowledge that is easy to digest.

Then I took the LA boating course and got my certificate from that.

Both taught me how to safely run a boat and what to focus on.

goodness you aren’t wrong.

A year or so ago we broke down right there at the launch and had someone tow us back in. These two clowns were drinking beer and loudly commenting on everything happening

It took everything we had to not go over there and whip their arse

Best thing to do is find I buddy that has a boat. Get him to teach you how to load/unload and operate it.

This is honestly the best answer.

As much as I hate big daddy govt there should be a min proficiency test in order to navigate on the water. Order “Rules of the Road” and practice it while on the water.
I have loaded and launched multiple boats for people that thought they knew what they were doing.

They should also have a proficiency test before being allowed to purchase a firearm. (1,000 downvotes incoming)
