Depends on the boat. I have a MasterCraft and I love it. We spend a ton of time out on the water wakeboarding and surfing with friends. I want a pool but we have a neighborhood pool 2 blocks away and I've been in it twice in the 3 years we've lived there.

They're all a waste, but who gives a shite. Enjoy your life and spend your money. I'm not trying to be the richest guy in the cemetery.

I wouldn't say obsolete. There are pools at the condos right next to the gulf. A little less appealing as a purchase option to some maybe. I fish year round and a boat still becomes a major pain in the arse at times. Well, a lot of times. But to answer the question, I'm going with the pool being the bigger waste. Just in terms of not being used as much.

A boat is more fun, but also a bigger waste of money.

use my pool almost every day from april to october
How does this affect homeowners insurance premiums? I would like to have a pool but then maybe not, if you know what I mean.

The pond would be good for you. Natural spring.

Boat.
And it's a lot easier to enjoy a pool. You just walk outside.

Boat
The idea that a pool is bad for resale on a home is bad conventional wisdom. You are adding a special feature that is specially enticing to a certain subset of buyers.
Will you absolutely “recoup your investment”? Maybe not. Will you have something that makes your house stand out to certain buyers in a sluggish market? Yep.

I have all 3. Boat got used 2 times this week and average at least once a week yearly. It’s used for fishing, duck hunting, frogging, crabbing, and going to the sandbar and anchoring. Pool gets used pretty regularly starting in April by kids and usually enjoying it until October. Generac does its own thing and there if we need it again like for ida!

It took longer than I expected for this investment to pay off. But I am on the only reliable grid in south Louisiana. Literally a mile away is the Energy maintained grid that is fed from another far away place and they are CONSTANTLY going down. I know this because my parents live on that grid and my internet service provider is on it. And they are both always down.
It’s a smart move IMO for most of this region to have at least a switch to plug in a temporary generator. Entergy just isn’t a reliable provider for most people.
But had I know that my power was fed from a more reliable grid, I wouldn't have prioritized the generator over other things.

For people who can actually afford them, neither are a waste if they get enjoyment out of them.
The issue with boats is that everyone wants one and people bite off more than they can chew in terms of affordability. Then it becomes a "waste" when it didn't have to be. People buy Grady Whites on Carolina Skiff budgets.

Hmmm
A boat you're looking at $500k or more plus insurance + upkeep
Pool you're looking at $80k or more plug upkeep
Generator varies with capacity. Probably $20k but your food won't rot and can sill have A/C.

The boat retains resale value, so the only expense is:
- interest
- depreciation
- maintenance
- fuel
Factor that in relative to the quality time it buys you. It seems the least wasteful.
You can also rent boats, which is a damn fortune, but it gives you something to benchmark ownership against.

Adults are the biggest waste

If you have kids (especially young ones) or elderly people in the house....I can see how generators are an important investment. It can be argued that it's a "need", where nobody really needs a boat or a pool.
But for most people that aren't serviced by Entergy, stand by full home generators are a luxury.

Just know someone with both or 2 people with one and the other between them.

It's all relative. I'm sure there are a good amount of people on this board that have a spare bedroom in their house that gets used way less than people use their pools or boats. They probably could have saved a decent amount of money buying a 3 BR house instead of a 4 BR.
