Front Page of the Boston Globe

Really long article so I won't post the entire thing here, so I'll just give some of the highlights.

quote:

More than 200 victims. At least 90 legal claims. At least 67 private schools in New England. This is the story of hundreds of students sexually abused by staffers, and emerging from decades of silence today.

quote:

So far this year, at least eight New England private schools have launched or disclosed sexual misconduct investigations. At least five of the probes — at St. George’s School in Rhode Island, Taft School in Connecticut, Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, Thayer Academy in Braintree, and Concord Academy in Concord — have led to staff members being placed on administrative leave or fired.

The troubles go way beyond those institutions. At least 67 private schools in New England have faced accusations since 1991 that staffers sexually abused or harassed more than 200 students, the Spotlight Team found through an examination of court cases, as well as interviews with alumni, relatives, school officials, and attorneys.

At least 90 lawsuits or other legal claims have been filed on behalf of the alleged victims, and at least 37 school employees were fired or forced to resign because of the allegations. In addition, nearly two dozen eventually pleaded guilty or were convicted on criminal charges of abusing children or related crimes.

The Globe also found 11 cases in which private school employees who were accused of sexual misconduct went on to work at other schools — an echo of the Catholic church scandal in which abusive priests were often moved to other parishes. At St. George’s School alone, at least three staff members accused of misconduct have gone on to jobs where they faced subsequent sexual misconduct allegations involving children, including one teacher accused in a lawsuit of abusing a teenager in Hawaii.

Can you not only imagine this happening to your kid, but sending them to one of the best schools in the country and paying over $50,000/year in tuition to have that happen?

Gee, we send off boys and girls in their sexual adolescence and not expect those that work around them to keep their hands clean.
We've got priests abusing their authority, Penn State cover up for decades, and school teachers in the papers every other day.
This, unfortunately, is not surprising to me in the least.

It's hard for the average person to understand, but these kids were so terrorized that they were probably scared to report this to authorities even decades after leaving these schools. Poor kids obviously still suffering with this bullshite to this day.

Wow. I attended a New England boarding school for a few years and I never heard about anything like this happening. I've got friends that went to Exeter and several that went to Andover, as well as some other well known schools and this is surprising. There was a lot of illicit sex occurring, but it was between students, not faculty & students.

We have teachers fricking kids all across the country at traditional schools, so to think it doesn't happen when the students actually live on campus is absurd.

I agree. It just never crossed my mind. The teachers at many boarding schools are not your typical trashy public school teachers who chose the easiest degree at some lower tier state school so they could get summers off. They don't complain about lesson planning on FB either

I worked at one of the schools mentioned and left the second I heard about these scandals. It's insane that something like this could happen and be swept under the rug.

Insane, but sadly it's gotten to the point where it would be news if we found an institution that wasn't dirty.

Do tell more. I'm sure the stories at these schools are nearly unbelievable. Many of these boarding schools are in small towns and no doubt between the school administrators and the uppity parents, they've taken over the local sheriff's department to the point none of the kids ever face any issues either.
Just no way can it be allowed to have the prestigious, and competitive, boarding school suffer any bad publicity such as a drug problem or sex abuse problem.
