If you had stolen from me at some point, I’d recommend you get a BMW.

What is comparable in a Lexus? The NX series?

Friend just sold his 2023 5series with 60k miles on it after a complete fuel system failure. The fix was 4 weeks and $6k. The ram dealer gave him $23k for it which was the highest he found after 5 different dealers looked at it.
BMWs are expensive to own, expensive to keep, and expensive to sell when you want to get rid of them.

Look at used BMWs, Mercs, and Audis and see how fast they depreciate, especially after 50k miles or so.
There is a reason this has been a historical trend for at least 10 years now.
I don't think you even really get the advantage of the brand unless you buy a nice one, too. The lower level models are literally designed for the Gucci purse population.

Houston BMW dealership has 120+ loaners in their inventory, the great majority of the time all are being loaned out for repairs. There’s your warning.

BMW advice please
Owned a BMW once upon a time, great driving car, expensive upkeep.

We own two Audis because it’s what we like. They have been reliable enough that I would buy them again.
We take care of these vehicles
My advice would be to buy certified pre owned a couple years old and don’t pay for that initial hit on depreciation. Buy a maintenance plan from BMW if you can, it saved us money.

NX is very close to X3-sized.
Some NXs are built in Japan, (the first character is “J” in the VIN, that’s your cheat)
New NXs start around low to mid $40ks
New RXs (the next size up) are close to $50k
You can painlessly drive either of those Lexus models for many years.
Mrs Füt (no pics) has a ‘17 NX with 130k miles on it.
Zero mechanical issues to date from new.

Wow, people love to bash!
Friend has had numerous BMW's,90's 3 series sedan, still running, still in good shape. An older X5 bought as CPO (lease trade in, whatever BMW calls it officialy), 10+ yrs of ownership, no major repairs, his wife and kids were hard on it. His personal vehicle is a 2000's 5 series. Yes, the the turbo's have been replaced due to age and wear, car still runs/drives great. His wife currently drives a 2020's X5, great service so far.
His good fortune convinced me to buy. My wife has '22 X5, no issues to date, very happy with it. My mother has '20 X3, again no issues, very reliable.

Top of your price range and "falling in love"
HARD PASS!!!
The feeling will pass and regret will set in every.month when you make payments at top of your range.
I enjoyed my BMW 328 standard but wouldnt have bought if it was remotely a financial stretch. Maintenance was never an issue but I could afford upkeep and large repairs if they'd have been needed.

Sounds like you're no stranger to old German cars. Mrs. ATX is on her 3rd Audi and had a VW Eos before that so we're clearly fans. Though I won't own one out of warranty. Her current car is a 2021 Q5e and that is gone as soon as the warranty is up later this year.

I’ve worked on cars as a hobby for the past 40 years. I built my son a Mini Cooper because it was what he wanted.
Mini is made by BMW and is engineered that way. The one thing to know is that they are precision machines. If everything isn’t working at 100%, it’s a dead chunk of metal.
They have an interesting engineering philosophy that doesn’t revolve around reliability, it revolves around performance and simplicity of manufacturing. For instance, if your fuel relay fails in your Chevy, you buy a 10 dollar relay, swap them out in 10 minutes and done. In a BMW, that relay is built into a circuit board. So you have to buy a 1400 dollar circuit board from BMW to get it working again and so on.
That said, they are incredibly fun to drive.

This is great advice. My wife loves her little BMW, but it is a maintenance nightmare.

Owning a BMW out of warranty is playing with fire.
