We have a couple here that stay red and don't blink yellow.

I turn left at the red light at the earliest safe opportunity.

What?

Solid green arrow means you have right of way.

That was already possible with the solid green light after a green arrow.

Only explanation I could find is that “it reduces confusion because the turn lane display is no longer the same indication as the adjacent thru lanes”.

But yea people are used to the “left turn yield on green” sign.

I'm glad I don't work in DOTD's PR Department anymore. It was always a bitch when the engineers decided to try new things.

The protected right turns that make the major lane stop for a 3 minute light cycle are the ones that need to be changed.

Perkins in particular it’s amazing you come to a red and there’s 1 car that turns right then the traffic just sits at an empty intersection

Whoa ,hold up there. Are the traffic lights synchronized yet? Some have been waiting like 40 years for that project to be realized.

The FYA eliminates the left turn trap, aka the yellow trap. That is when the permissive LT would get a solid yellow while the opposing through would still have a green. The permissive LT would wrongly assume that the opposing through would also be slowing down due to having their own yellow, causing the LT to try and sneak one or two more cars through before red, resulting in severe crashes.

TLDR: FYA are safer than your normal doghouse/5-section.

They became standard in Alabama several years ago.

I think he means solid green light with no arrow. I see quite a few crashes around my work because people see green and think they can turn, but they still have to yield to oncoming traffic.

The flashing yellow arrow still turns to solid yellow when it’s about to turn red. This is literally just replacing a solid green light with a flashing yellow arrow. Nothing else about the light sequence changes.

Had to look this up to understand.

I can see that happening. Looks like it would happen more from a car pulling up past the stop bar while waiting for oncoming traffic. only to get stuck during yellow.

If a car waits behind the stop bar like they're supposed to, that doesn't happen. But yea the flashin yellow eliminates that stupidity.

Given the elevated IQ of Louisiana (and in particular Baton Rouge) drivers, is this new blinking left turn light system really better than this?

The basic problem appears to be that many people don't understand or care that when turning left EVERYONE ELSE has the right of way except when you have a green turn arrow. Blinking lights won't fix this.

If you replace a circular green with a FYA, then you can phase it so that the left turn turns red when the opposing through does. The left turn trap would happen when the adjacent through had to turn red because the opposing LT was turning a protected green. The opposing through would stay green in that scenario while your permissive LT had to turn red because it was tied to the adjacent through.

We have these in Monroe.

Good to see Baton Rouge join the best part of the state, North Louisiana, with these.
