Black Florida teen fights back after SAT cheating accusation, Lawyer threatens to sue

A Florida high school honors student is fighting back after she says her SAT score was held for review following a massive increase from a test earlier this year -- an uncommon practice that only happens in a "tiny fraction" of cases
quote:
ETS officials told Campbell she scored 1,230, which is more than 300 points higher than when she took the SAT in March, the lawyer said. SAT scores range from 400 to 1,600
quote:
ETS told Campbell in a letter received Dec. 19 that a preliminary review showed "substantial evidence" that her score was invalid because of "substantial agreement between your answers on one or more scored sections of the test and those of other test-takers," according to Crump and a College Board spokesperson. That was among a number of factors for which her scores are under review, the board said, without elaborating. Campbell's score is being held while it's under review, a spokesperson for The College Board said. At the end of the process, depending on how the investigation turns out, her score might be released to her, but its also possible her score would be cancelled, the board said. ETS deferred to the College Board for comment, which in a statement said research shows "students who spent 20 hours on Official SAT Practice gained an average of 115 points," and that "these gains were consistent across race, income, and gender." The letter to Campbell "never references score gains as a reason for her scores being under review," a College Board spokesperson said.

I wonder if she studied or cheated, 300+ points is a substantial increase.

So her first score was around 900?
Should’ve just looked for a trade school.

I read this story yesterday. What I don't get is why they hired a civil rights attorney? Is it racist to hold up scores to check for authenticity?

That's quite the strategy if she did in fact cheat.
Makes me lean toward believing her.

She's got nothing to lose. If she cheats, she just threatens to give the SAT folks a bad reputation in the hopes that they capitulate out of fear of a civil rights case against them. If she fails, oh well, she wasn't getting into a decent college anyway. It's a win-win for Crump too. He gets free publicity either way which is all his cases are about

The teenager received another letter on Oct. 31, indicating her score was still being reviewed and a decision would take up to six weeks. Once the time frame passed, Crump said Campbell called ETS multiple times.
9 weeks later and she still doesn't have the results? Not sure why she hired a civil rights lawyer, but she was smart to get a lawyer involved

Everything is racist

Crump 100% is taking this case for free purely for the attention. My guess is he got wind of this story, tracked down the family and offered his services.

With the mob in this country, even if she cheated, that will no longer matter because "racism"

The old adage of any publicity is good publicity is not correct, especially in the social media age

I don't think this is accurate.

Not in the race game. Crump knows how to play the race pimp game. He knows Jesse and Al won't be around for too much longer and he's positioning himself to fill the vacuum when they go.

When I was in high school the principal called me to his office.
He handed me his car keys and a small poster with a name on it. He told me to go to the airport and when flight 123 arrived, pick up the man arriving.
I did and on the way back to school I asked him if he was coming to teach. He replied no he was with the College Entrance Exam Boards. When a student who made a low score followed up with a high score, red flags go up.
We get back to school, and in the office one of my best friends was there with his parents. His mom was crying and I introduced the principal and disappeared.
He took friend to a private room in the library and had him take the test again.
His high score was thrown out and his new, lower score remained. I wonder if retesting is still done today?

One of my kid's best friends scored pretty well the first time out (1250+). Parents paid nearly a thousand dollars for one of those SAT prep classes.
Took it a second time and scored over 1500. It happens. No way in hell did my kid's friend cheat. It was a pretty substantial improvement though.

I am pretty sure these disputes go to arbitration, not to court.

Or maybe when she took the test the first time she just had a bad day, froze up, messed up the timing and didn't finish substantial portions? It's possibly to have a low outlier on standardized tests every once in a while.
Maybe she could take it a third time and see which of the two previous scores looks like the outlier?

You can bump those scores up considerably if you work your arse off studying for it.
Unless they can prove something, they should release those scores.

Everyone is focused on the raised score, but it appears there was a statistical anomaly in the way her answered were the same as another test takers.
I guess she can argue the other test taker cheated off of her.
