A bison tossed a woman off a trail Tuesday afternoon near Old Faithful, marking the year’s first incident between a bison and a visitor at Yellowstone National Park. Park officials said in a press release Wednesday morning that 72-year-old Virginia Junk was walking around a bend in a trail near Old Faithful and didn’t see the bison.
quote:

The release said the bison dropped its head and butted her in the thigh. The animal pushed her off the trail.
quote:

Junk, of Boise, Idaho, was not given any citation for being too close to the animal. Park regulations require visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from bison. Visitors are required to stay at least 100 yards from bears and wolves.

There was one similar incident in 2017. There were five in 2015.

That pic looks like it was taken in 1992.

This is a real life situation where a rodeo clown would be useful.

It’s funny this has to be a rule.

People think these places are like zoos where you can get close to the animals.

I'll never forget the story a hiker told me about when he came across some parents posing their 2 kids in front of a bear on the trail. Morons.

Or they don't realize that nature isn't always cuddly and is often cruel.

Wasn't there an instance a couple years back where some folks picked up an "abandoned" bison calf thinking it needed up, and, after the herd/mother wouldn't take it back, the calf had to be euthanized?

Very true. I've been to Yellowstone a couple of times and am stunned more people aren't seriously hurt than actually are. People get up close to really big animals like bison and moose thinking they're so placid and focused on eating grass that it's perfectly safe. Generally they will leave you alone but if they feel threatened at all you are in big trouble.

Do NOT pet the bison. It is a very bad idea. I actually had to warn someone about this once, she was about to reach out to it.

BTW, the bison in that pic apparently has some junk of his own showing.

Drove through Teddy Roosevelt Nat'l Park several years ago and the size of those Bison up close is incredible. I wouldn't dare get out of the vehicle to get face to face with one

It left the old lady alive? This is why we easily defeated the bison and took their land.
