A bill to ban the addition of fluoride to Louisiana’s public water systems has advanced to the state’s senate floor. Senate Bill 2, sponsored by Republican Senators Mike Fesi, Patrick McMath, and Heather Cloud passed through the Health and Welfare committee by a 6-3 vote Wednesday night following a hearing that lasted just over an hour.

The bill now heads to the Senate floor for debate. Currently, Louisiana law requires the Louisiana Department of Health to establish a water fluoridation program for public water systems with at least 5,000 service connections — with some exceptions made for water systems that meet certain criteria. LDH is also responsible for establishing the levels of fluoride that public water systems must comply with.

If passed, SB 2 would repeal LDH’s water fluoridation program and prohibit the fluoridation of public water systems effective at the start of the new year.

For the conspiracy theorists...
You get more fluoride from a cup of tea than you do from a liter of tap water.
Raisins have three times higher concentration of fluoride than what is found in tap water.
Seafood and leafy greens like spinach are also higher in fluoride than tap water.

Flouride prob isnt harmful. But it also isnt necessary and not using it will also save some money.

He said studies linking fluoride to lowering children’s IQ, thyroid issues and other negative health impacts are all related to high doses of fluoride — with levels of at least 1.5 parts per million. The standard for community water fluoridation in Louisiana and across the country is 0.7 parts per million.

The dose makes the poison,” Kerst said. “We don’t fluoridate at even half of that level. [It’s] the same way that if I gave you too much salt, the same if you drink too much water, it could also be considered to be bad for you.”

This is what I’ve always thought to be true…oxygen is toxic if you ingest too much.

Do they know for certain that 0.7 parts per million is toxic? If so, they should provide that evidence before they run around trying to ban things.

I think I lean against fluoride in water because the least amount of chemicals we consume the better, but have no idea why this works people up so much. Are there truly that many (any?) benefits to it? Isn't it supposed to be good for teeth but most toothpaste has fluoride in it anyway so why does it need to be in the water?

This whole debate is proof anything can be used as a wedge issue.

Comparisons of similar populations have shown over and over that dental procedures rise in areas that do away with fluoride.

Truth.

Maybe one thing we can agree on is that this is a silly thing for the state legislature to be debating.

Water supplies are managed at the municipal level and if we need a government solution, perhaps they should start at the level of the problem.

That way you don’t have some dude who went to Tulane law and lived his entire life in NOLA and BR having a say in what people in Natchitoches put in their water while those very people do not.

We're fighting this fight here in FL. The problem is the main populations that benefit from fluoridated water, the poor children and aging adults will be the ones to suffer the most. I've seen it for 30 years in my practice, the patients on unfluoridated well water have significantly higher decay rates. Fluoridation has been around for many years and suddenly now it's a health problem?
Way too many internet "experts" that are just citing faulty research and people take it in like so much pablum without using their brain.

I'm not saying people were wrong to question the rushed covid vaccines but covid made it where people now distrust longstanding and proven health practices, choosing to ignore the evidence in favor of their own opinion, which they view as absolutely correct even if they did no research and have nothing backing their views. And those people are running for office and winning. Regardless, I'm just glad the LA leg is tackling the tough issues.

Great. So add it to your own water. Why should other people be forced to take a pharmaceutical against their will?

longstanding and proven health practices,

That isn't how science works. Science only works when you can question anything and everything.

Part of this issue that gets missed is there is a difference between calcium-fluoride and sodium-fluoride. Calcium fluoride is good for you and there is little evidence of it being harmful.

The same cannot be said about sodium fluoride. Sodium fluoride has been proven to calcify around the pineal gland. That is the gland that resides in the middle of your brain. You can easily start searching about the ongoing research regarding this calcification but there is a rather small mountain of evidence building showing this calcification is not beneficial to your health or mental wellbeing.
