Honestly, I would think the Catholic Church would weather SG better than others simply because Catholic and St Joe are considered top tier schools and many of their other schools are considered feeders for them.

The likes of St Michael and Cristo Rey? They’d probably take a hit but so would a bunch of schools for other denominations.

The thing I’m pissed about is the Catholic Church’s involvement in Together Baton Rouge. They think they are too big to fail due to their stranglehold on private education in BR. St. George is a threat to their money, therefore their enemy.

I will not dispute this, but my wife and I were going to send our children to Catholic school no matter what. It wasn't until years (and tens of thousands of dollars) later we regret not moving to Zachary.

So, risk being stuck in St George with the unknown, take a risk that you become unincorporated again which may not happen, or become part of BR which guarantees higher taxes.

Remind me again, wasn’t the huge argument against StG that it would cause the incorporated areas to go up in taxes?

StG, as of now, does not have the millage for a police force that BR does, nor will they ever have the CATS tax that BR does.

Cristo Rey is the old Redemptorist High and services inner city kids, so St. George will have no impact on this school.

Too bad he's wrong.
No, too bad you're wrong.

He said "Once the petition is in play annexes are frozen."

"Once the petition is in play..."

"Once the petition is in play..."

"Once the petition is in play..."

"Once the petition is in play..."

So, he was absolutely correct.

Was the petition in play after it failed the first time? Isn't there a two year waiting period before another petition can be circulated? What went on during those two years? Link me a law that refutes this and I'll retract my statement. Why didn't the city attempt to annex this area BEFORE the original petition?

Irrelevant to what he posted. Stop trying to justify your not reading his post correctly before you said he was wrong.

NO, their ONLY option NOW is to petition to be annexed by BR. It's also their option that would require the least amount of time and work and has less risk that they will get what they want.

You say the goal is to get what they want. I agree, they should get what they want.

Now I don’t know what they want, but I know there are three possible options and a process to get to each one.

I suspect folks in those neighborhoods have different ideas and if a petition is passed around and they get 50% wanting in BR then by all means they should go for it.

But right now, we do not know what the majority wants. People may or may not have made up their minds. To those that have not they should be aware of the possible outcomes.

You just outlined the situation for them, they have options.

This is what the OP said:

quote:

They couldn't. Once the petition is in play annexes are frozen.

The city had two years to annex St. George between the time the first petition failed and the time the second petition was circulated. Why didn't they, and what is so difficult to understand?

The citizens make that decision, not the city. The citizens in the area were too busy complaining about not wanting higher taxes with St. George and forgot to request annexation into Baton Rouge, the city they purport to love being a part of so much

Sound to me like they screwed up then. The city could have appealed to the anti-St. George folks to get them in to the city, but they did not. I'm sure many of these folks would have gladly supported annexation in to Baton Rouge proper. Why didn't the anti-St. George folks in the area petition the city to be annexed in to Baton Rouge proper? Do you live in the area?

This was a massive failure on Sharon Weston Broome's part, and now she's relying on the well heeled community of Baton Rouge to bail her out of a mess SHE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN CREATING!!!

No it wasn't in play, but like I mentioned in a post above this, annexation is up to the residents, not the city, unless youre kip holden out there soliciting annexation. But he only does that for businesses not peon residents.

Anyway, sure, between the two petitions the citizens could have pushed their neighborhoods to annex into BR, but apparently they really DIDNT want to be a part of the city as much as they claimed they wanted to be, because only 1 street off Coursey applied.

Legal question, and I don’t know the answer.

Once the SG petition was certified, could those in the affected area petition to be annexed by BR?

Say the answer is yes, then some folks could have applied to the C-P Council months ago.

Say the answer is no, then the election made no difference.

The point, when did the petition quit being “in play”?

I have no problem of people wanting to opt out. Let St. George incorporate, then, if you want to leave, petition to leave. However, there is no legal reason for anybody to oppose this. The St. George organizers followed the law to a "T" to get this passed. I really hope their argument is "the rest of the parish didn't get to vote," because that could possibly invalidate the incorporation of three municipalities created in the last several years.

Imho there are four camps, those that want in SG, those that want in BR, those that want to remain unincorporated, and then those that are undecided or don’t care.

Until a petition is passed around no one really knows if any of those groups could muster 50% on a signature.

Now the pro BR crowd would like to make it as if it’s either SG or either BR; however, in the end they could collectively ask to be unincorporated. There are three choices.

Don't hold your breath for that. I dont get to vote for councilmen who don't represent my district, but their actions could sure as hell affect my home/business/taxes, etc.

Baton Rouge didn’t want the people that didn’t get annexed before the vote. What on earth makes them think they care about them now. They are nothing but tokens and they are too stupid or naive to see it. I strongly suggest for anyone to drive through Bocage and count For Sale signs. They are bailing. There is no hiding it.

The Parish as a whole is better of WITH St. George than without.
