I'm sure the St. George proponents people did a ton of canvassing in the underprivileged areas to make sure they understood the implications and were able to make informed decisions.
I'm sure they worked just as hard there as they did to drum up supporters in the affluent areas.
We did Sally. Very few people in those areas signed the petition the 1st time around.
Don't forget, it was the dozens of arrests at Woodlawn High School in less than one semester that led to the initial "Local Schools for Local Children" movement. The underprivileged kids you're talking about can't learn when there's an arrest every day on campus, can they?

If this is ONLY about better schools, why did it snowball into being a new city?
They tried TWICE to get a school district. It did not make it out of legislative session. After the second attempt, Regina Barrow and Sharon Weston Broome told the StG backers that they would have better luck forming their own city in order to get a school district (I have a feeling they never thought this would actually happen or they wouldn't have said a word).

Can you clarify some of this annexation stuff? There was some confusion earlier about people being annexed into BR and whether or not they would pay the taxes for CATS and who would service them for police/fire.

1. There is no timeline to annex. The "30 day clock" does NOT apply to annexations, only election certifications. Unless and until St. George becomes a city, annexations can continue as usual. Over the normal course of events, it would take several months for the city of St. George to actually be formed (and affect the annexation process) or several years if litigation is filed (which is most certainly will be). That being said, since we don't actually know when St. George will be ready, we'd like to move as quickly as possible getting these annexations processed.
I believe LSURussian called me paranoid when I said this would be the strategy.

Didn’t the state pass a law that you weren’t able to do annexations while there was an incorporation attempt in progress? You know, SPECIFICALLY because BR fricked with St George last time around?
Yes, and as I said before (and was roundly jeered for it) this would be the plan and the whole point is to create a second layer of frickery once St.G is "blessed" by the courts. They would then have to spend more time and treasure fighting these annexations.
They need to get their lawyers into court NOW to get an injunction against this.
BTW, the "experienced annexation attorney" has GOT to be MOP.

Someone posted the following earlier in this thread. Anyone know if it is true?
Edit: thanks udtiger for the above post

M.E. just posted this same thing on Nextdoor and the first reply called her out on it saying their taxes would immediately go up which was the same fear tactic they tried to use against STG

I tried to tell him too. It's weird that there are so many uninformed people on the OT who a) care enough to click on a St. George thread and b) despite being uninformed, jump right to the racist angle. It's bizzarro world.

You just want to push victimhood with your sarcasm and have been trying to do this most of thread. Go ahead and play the race card. You know you want to. BR and EBR schools made it about race. Blacks came to view it as racist even when the ones that were included in original boundaries. Go figure StG didn’t find support there.
Those original Supporters just needed a certain number of registered voters to just sign to put incorporating to a vote even if the voters were not sure at that point how they wanted to vote. There was no risk asking for signature. It was not yet vote at that point, BUT had signatures not been challenged there would have been a vote and a need to know what areas needed more of a push. If votes had then gone to incorporate the area would have been in StG as that was what was originally submitted and what original supporters pushed to make happen.
It’s ignorant to think they didn’t try to get a feel of all voters in included areas as at the time they thought they were going to have to come back after asking for signatures and ask for their actual vote of support once put on ballot.
TBR is same way. Plays race card. Call supporters of StG racist as well as entire movement to incorporate and then act like no way supporters would have noticed or found a lack of support within a majority black area in original boundaries.

I love how it was racist to include these areas the first time around and racist to NOT include them the second time around due to a combination of low support and TBR frickery in challenging signatures of people living in rental property, which is far more likely to be minority.

You're better than that.

Don’t you dare leave me hanging when you go knock on her door and ask her to sign the petition to join SG.

Well all the opposition has is racist. They have zero points besides that. The opposition was the one to even bring race into this. From the onset, it was about schools but the TBR people turned it into a race thing when they had no defense against one of the worst school districts in the worst state for education.

I believe it’s CharlesLandry. I think he’s also affiliated with real estate and The BRAF.

That's what they scream when they have no other argument. I saw plenty of pro STG comments from black people on my Nextdoor including a number of them that said they voted for it.

Not the same situation, but I believe it was reported that BRFD couldn’t support the Mall so in an interest to maintain safety, SGFD is paid to service the part of the mall that’s in the city.

CATS is a mess. I don't claim to know who they serve or where their property tax assessment is in effect.
I know I pay the CATS property tax on my property tax bill and I've never stepped foot on a CATS vehicle.

It's why they wanted the whole parish to vote. They knew if this was a parish-wide vote (which would have been the only time the entire parish voted on an incorporation....ever) their screams of racism would work in NBR. Just from comments in all the StG threads, FB, etc, it's easy to see that 90% of people would not have done any research and just voted off the claims of SWB and TBR.
