Explain Tara's wonky-arse district. looks like spokes on a wheel

I know that when Capitol became a Charter school, some school districts expanded westward to include those kids since Capitol was no longer a traditional public school.

Explain how incorporating, as the lovely Mayor suggested when she was still a legislator, to attempt to have better schools than the current system, which is near last in a state that is last in education, is about race?

Regardless, it's great news that the Gardere are would be included in the St. George ISD. That area and those kids will be in a much better position with new and better schools.

Anything is better than EBR schools. Had they shown an interest they may have stayed in original StG city boundaries (it was basically the SEBR school district in earlier pic). They did not, so this attempt did not include same areas as first one.
Hopefully TBR will help them incorporate into Baton Rouge like they are helping the more affluent residents of StG before officially incorporates.

Did you see the map posted in this thread? The Gardere area falls within the proposed school district, which does not mimic the incorporated area. Although the area will not be within incorporated SG, it will be within the proposed SGSD if it passes.

Tara went to Gus Young when I went there 91-94.

And they always went to tiger bend, too.

Go on, then. Tell us what you know about the history of St. George. Tell us about "Local Schools for Local Children" in 2011 and 2012, and how Norman Browning's volunteer efforts going back over a decade at Woodlawn High School led to him wanting better for those kids.

Go on, we're waiting.

When BR annexes straight down streets like that small neighborhood off Coursey in 2014 who approves the actual street becoming part of BR and leaving the unincorporated parish? Is that just some internal city-parish handover initiated by the Mayor-President or do the parish citizens get to vote?

There are some messed up draw boundaries forming SE part of Baton Rouge, and several spots basically locked out of ever joining any city but the surrounding city of Baton Rouge.

I'm pretty sure I read over the last couple months where the spokesman for the SG incorporation effort, attorney Drew Murrell, said the boundaries of any future St. George school district have not been determined yet.

That's one of the reasons I was surprised that tommy was saying in this thread that the school district's lines are already signed into law.

Oh wow, well if that's the case I certainly expect they will look to cut out the Gardere area.

If this is ONLY about better schools, why did it snowball into being a new city?

That’s why I said area could have also been in city of StG if it had supported StG and was in the original boundaries of the StG incorporated push several years ago (which looked closer to the school district drawn up in that pic). The push a few years ago didn’t get on ballot after some signatures challenged. The StG boundaries that just passed had been redrawn based in part on lack of support during that first signature push in some areas and lack of support shown in general (reason the advocate building drawn around and left out). School boundaries will probably not match original SE school district drawn after BR annexes and StG changing (due to support of changing or not being altered), but I am sure they will take on more surrounding areas outside of city like other municipal districts in EBR parish did.

If included in a new district it doesn’t mean Gardere can’t push to be annexed in city of BR if that’s what residents want instead of StG (not sure if lack of support there was wishing to become part of BR or just wanting to stay unincorporated). If it wants to be in BR area as a whole probably wants to stay in EBR schools, but that would be unwise. They need to see through race card and both support & push to be included in StG schools whenever that happens.

Just as I suspected, you don't know the history of it.

It started as a few concerned Shenandoah/Woodlawn residents going "we can run the schools in this area better than the downtown BR folks can". They attempted to form their own school district, but were told by the state legislature they needed to form their own city to do that.

quote: They aren’t smart enough to realize this and/or they are hypocritical bastards doing this because of “frick you, got mine” because their kids are in the EBR magnet program and they don’t want to risk that. Magnet parents are 90% of the active opposition to St George. Plenty of them are hipsters or pseudo intellectuals. They think they are soo much smarter than "those private school" parents. Pretty much all of them hate Trump and despise conservatives and YES they do think we are all racists. Do not discount them because their efforts are lead by hipster lawyers. Most are doing pro bono work so money is not an object for them to attack.

This seems like a rational stance. If you’re one of the few that can get your kid into a good magnet, the benefits of participation in St. George cancels itself out. ...However, it’s also short sighted, as the long term property values will clearly favor the St. George property adjacent to the street that wanted to make a statement and annexed to EBR.

I'm sure the St. George proponents people did a ton of canvassing in the underprivileged areas to make sure they understood the implications and were able to make informed decisions.

I'm sure they worked just as hard there as they did to drum up supporters in the affluent areas.

They were told they could not have an ISD because they were not a city. They were told to form a city and then they could have the ISD.

Why would they be included? They don’t want to be apart of SG.
