People don't just expand their accounting department and add jobs because someone got laid off.

No, there's lots of clowns on here making fun of the situation.
Trillions of dollars and several national governments around the world were not planning for this to happen at this magnitude.
A lot of these people are engineers, back office personnel, and so on. It's a sad situation. The supposed net benefit for the rest of the economy hasn't materialized as of yet, either.

No, but a quick search in Baton Rouge shows 276 accounting related positions open right now. Accounting skills can transfer to most other industries, same with Sales, IT, etc. - Product skills don't transfer very well into anything.

I think most working people are sick of supporting others through welfare so when oil workers ask you to pay more for gas so they can work it brings up negative thoughts because no one has asked that for other industries.
There were a lot of unemployed people after the housing bust but no one was begging people to keep buying real estate.

The question on those jobs is compensation. There are a shitton of jobs in Houston that my JD qualifies me to take. Unfortunately most of them these days have no future and off piss poor compensation.
Fortunately I should be safe, but even post grad degrees are no guarantee in today's world

Our VP of SSA was laid off last week. I'm sure he had a degree. I have a friend who was the Global BD director and I know he has a degree. He was laid off as well.

With minimal dedication to the job and 15-20 hours of work each week, I was given free housing and food. It sucks looking at the privileged living in the upscale new apartments and not having to work during school, but suffering for a few years can really pay off in the end.

You are missing my point though. Every industry lays off their executives from time to time, but these executives can be in a new job a whole lot faster with a much wider range of industries to get in. Sales, Management, IT and Finance are all professions that transfer very well.

I'm an oil worker through and through, and this guy is a moron. It's economics, plain and simple. to bitch about the price of oil (be it high or low) is to go against the free market.
By working an oil job to produce more oil, this man's son had a tiny hand in causing the glut.
And of course he wants to blame the OPEC Muslims for this one.

The only thing that annoys me is when O&G guys suggest that everyone should be willing to pay higher prices to supplement their industry or impose taxes to make them more competitive. That begins to sound a lot like welfare to me.
There was a bubble with a lot of small and mid sized producers borrowing tons of money to extract on a high per barrel cost basis because of artifically inflated prices. The US continued to add production at higher and higher rates despite projected falling demand. Our E&P players were supported and encouraged by SA's previous upward manipualtion. That comes to a head and SA says they aren't going to cut production to prop up the price and lose market share to less efficient producers. People getting pissed and proposing government intervention are ridiculous.

What a dick head statement, of course there's oil field trash but that can be said for any industry, I spend 20 yrs in then oil field and was laid off in July, i got in after spending 8 yrs in the Marines and the oil field gave me a great opportunity to support my young family, started off as a instrumentation and electronics tech making 15 hr and made my way to Technical manager making pretty damn good money, not OT baller shite but enough
