White with dark blue tie.

I see that's what everyone said.

Reading the replies in threads like this reminds me that I have no idea how to dress myself.

White shirt, navy or red tie.

NOT black shirt. Unless it's silk. Then wear only halfway buttoned up, and wear a few gold chains, no socks and some sort of navy or black velvet slippers.

I was leaning more towards black shirt with neck unbuttoned and no tie

Dear Lord, no. White shirt. Any color tie. It is pretty easy with a grey suit.

White or light blue or white and light blue striped shirt. Navy tie, either solid, striped, or neat printed. Or, if you want to get really crazy, a green tie, either solid, striped, or neat printed.

This. Blues work really well with charcoal

Great idea! Are you an immigrant with alot of chest hair? Will you accent that chest hair with chains and medallions?

I'll unbutton the neck and go with no tie. Looks good imo. Doesn't show the chest. Wear a v-neck tee so it doesn't show your undershirt

there is a site that gives you a color combination chart, based on color of shoes, slacks etc. I don't have the link handy - just google it. I have the thing printed and keep it in my closet.

Don't listen to these fools. I just wore a charcoal suit with a black shirt with no tie to a funeral on Tuesday. I did have the second button buttoned up. No gold chains or chest hair. It looked really good and when I got back to the office all of the women were getting moist. I could smell it in the air.

White or light blue shirt

Red, blue or burgundy tie (can have pattern or designs, but primary color of tie).

This is the correct answer. If you want to change it up, you can go with a blue tie. The vast majority of suits will look best with a white shirt and a red or blue tie.
