Best Reasonably Inexpensive Beginner Golf Clubs?

Anyone got a good site or brand to recommend? I have to play more for work so I'm finally gonna attempt to be committed. Also, are the hybrid wood irons frowned upon? Hit with a friend of mine's who had these and really liked them. They aren't considered some BS cheat that Ima get ripped for are they?
Appreciate all the help! How much should I be looking to spend?

what do you consider "reasonably cheap"?

Go to Watts, or a demo day. Try some out.
Recommending club sets is like running shoes. What one guy likes you may hate.

I'd say go with craigslist. You don't want to start with new crappy clubs (that'll be inexpensive) and obviously don't want a huge financial commitment of buying good expensive new clubs.

I would recommend a hybrid set for a beginner. Look for oversize irons w/graphite shaft otherwise.

This is what I did.

If the OP isn't 10 or 80 years, he would probably be better off with steel shafted irons.

Something like this full Strata set is a decent reasonably priced set if you want to go with something new.

Edwin Watts has some used sets that are very recent models at pretty good prices. And don't take the price marked as final. Their "used" club prices are negotiable ("demo" clubs are not).

Craigslist for sure, you can find clubs for around $100. Especially if you're starting out..the difference a pricier set of clubs will do for you is very minimal if any at this point.

Just perusing quickly on Dick's website, there are iron sets from $199 to $1199. Buying a $1200 set of Titelist blades off craigslist is doing him a disservice if he's just getting into the game.
OP, seriously, do some research and be willing to spend a little bit extra on your clubs to get a set that will work for you. There are deals to be had on newer technology that will last you a long time.

Look for an old set of ping eye2. Old enough to be cheap, forgiving and still able to work the ball as you advance. The lofts are a bit steeper so you won't hit as far but just club up. You can't go wrong. Also hybrids are great, just look for stiff shaft unless you are old or 115 pounds.

something used/new with a cavity back ... doesn't matter what brand ... no iron longer than a 4-iron, pw-4 ... 2 hybrids, 3 metal, driver ... sw ...
buy a large, heavy wooden handled broom ... make a long, slow golf swing with it 100 times a day ...
don't waste time or money trying to get fitted for a perfect set of golf clubs ... just go buy some and start hitting balls and playing ...

You'd have to define a price, but Wilson staff is making some very good max game improvement clubs these days.

Golf clubs are like running shoes. There is no "best brand". Even if you want cheap clubs, please go to a demo day or a to any decent seller that will let you hit clubs. Some will feel better than others. Tell them you are a beginner, they won't try and put you into more club that you need(well maybe a little).

Craigslist or ebay. Look for some old Ping, Mizuno, Adams, or Taylormade clubs.
