Stay in the theater district at TheWit. Buy a City Pass and hit all those manor attractions for about half price - SkyDeck at the Willis Tower, Field Museum (with Sue the t-rex), Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, Adler Planetarium. Also hit Millenium Park and the Navy Pier.
Field Museum has an incredible dinosaur collection. Everything is a short cab ride away from that area.

I stayed at the Hotel Burnham in the theatre district and really liked it. It's pretty close to those attractions listed above and Millennium Park and Magnificent Mile. Also enjoyed the lounge at the top of the John Hancock Center building.

Both the Sheraton Grand and Embassy Suites (on N Columbus) put you on the north side of the river but within easy walking distance of Magnificent Mile, the Loop, the Navy Pier, Millenium Park, and the Red Line (which you can take north to Wrigley, south to the Loop to transfer lines, or further south to Roosevelt to be close to the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, etc).

The W Lakeshore, Hyatt Magnificent Mile, the Doubletree Magnificent Mile, and several other hotels are also in that area, but are each a few blocks further away from the Red Line and/or the Loop. Shop around for pricing.

What are your interests? What kind of places do you like? Are you coming with a wife or are you single? What time of year are you coming?

Chicago is a huge city with lots of shite to do and lots of areas to see.

I get why tourists stay in the Mag Mile area, but it's like the 8th best part of the city if you want my opinion, although hotels can be difficult to find elsewhere.

Sucks. Don't go.

Portillo's and Lou Malnati's is all you need.

The James Hotel is very close to Michigan Ave in downtown. Lots to do and see around there.

Haven't been there since the early 80's. Had to stay in the Ambassador East because of North By Northwest. Think someone said it's gone now.

This was probably meant as a joke, but if you want to spend a day at the Museum of Science & Industry and hang out around UofC, I'd highly recommend. Lots of history down there (the first Heisman Trophy is in the student center).

I stayed at the Palmer Hilton a while back. I would stay there again. Train takes you right to it with a subway outside as well. Very convenient.

I plan on going to Chicago for the first time at the end of May.
All I have planned so far is baseball games.

Love this place. Stayed here about a month ago. Classic hotel. Grab a cab to wherever you want and staff are great.

Eat at The Girl & the Goat. One of the best meals of your life. Make reservations well in advance.

Get an AirBNB. If you don't feel comfortable doing that then the Palmer is a nice place to stay. One of the older hotel rooms in Chicago so you're going to get smaller rooms but extravagant lobby.

What's your budget? That also depends on where you can stay. When are you going? Prices are increasing from now until late in the year with peak pricing being summer time.
